James Gray, Sr., began his journey through life on August 30, 1943, in Rich Square, North Carolina. He was born to the parentage of the late Junious Gray and Doshie Stephenson Gray.
James served his country in the United States Army for three years, before being honorably discharged. He was employed as a brick mason for over twenty years, before retiring. Shortly thereafter, he came out of retirement and he began working with D. B. Elswick Construction, until the day of his passing (over 15 years).
James loved gardening and fishing. He would plant vegetables for family and friends to enjoy and would often give the grandkids lessons on how to survive on the land.
On Wednesday, January 24, 2018, James passed away in Hampton, Virginia.
Left to cherish many fond memories are: seven children, Cynthia Cox (Darron) of Newark, New Jersey, Angela Edwards of Margarettsville, North Carolina, Tawanda Harris of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Tameka Hicks of Charlotte, North Carolina, James Gray, Jr. (Saleemah) of Newport News, Virginia; Michael O*Neal of Woodland, North Carolina and Dwayne Gray (Jennifer) of Virginia Beach, Virginia; four siblings, Mary Rainer of Portsmouth, Virginia, Jessica Thom of New Jersey, Calvin Gray of Lamar, South Carolina, and Claude Gray (Frances) of Kelford, North Carolina; a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
