Alexander Worrell, Jr., known affectionately as Zan or Alex, entered this world on May 19, 1951, in Margarettsville, North Carolina, born to the late Alexander Worrell, Sr., and Bernice Pearl O. Hendricks Worrell.
While still a young child, Alex's parents relocated to Brooklyn, New York, where he spent much of his upbringing. However, he maintained a strong connection to North Carolina, often spending summers there. When asked where he was from, he would proudly say, “I am a North Carolina born New Yorker."
Educated in the New York City Public School System, Alex later found employment with the New York City Housing Authority. After earning his General Education Diploma, he enlisted in the United States Army, serving with distinction.
During his time in the Army, Alex pursued further education, becoming a Practical Nurse for six years and nine months. His dedication led him to reenlist, serving as a Medical Noncommissioned Officer for an additional eight years. He was recognized for his service with numerous awards and decorations, including the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal , National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon-2, Expert Badge W/Rifle Bar M-16, and Expert Badge W/Grenade Bar. Sergeant Worrell was also a Gunnery Soldier.
Alex was a true soldier at heart! While deployed during Desert Storm he became seriously ill. After a lengthy hospital stay, he was honorably discharged for medical reasons.
Alex found love and companionship with Cynthia, whom he married on July 18, 2003. Together, they shared a deep bond and welcomed a child into their lives.
Alex's faith remained steadfast throughout his life. He was an active member of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a Trustee. His dedication to his church and community reflected his unwavering commitment to his faith.
In addition to his professional and religious pursuits, Alex cherished time with his family, particularly enjoying wrestling and attending church activities. He was a loving and caring presence, deeply devoted to his loved ones.
On March 30, 2024, Alex passed away at his home in Hampton, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his son, Shombe Davidson; grandson, Jarell Worrell; great-granddaughter, Yasaniy Smith; brothers, Pernell, Herbert and Bryan Worrell, and sister, Denise Worrell-Garrett.
Alex leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories.
