Alice 'Rye Boone' Daughtry Obituary

Alice "Rye" Vivian Boone Daughtry was born on October 9, 1943, in Margaretville, North Carolina, to the late Curtis and Lear Carpenter Boone. She peacefully transitioned from this life on August 14, 2025, at the age of 81, at Portside Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Portsmouth, Virginia.

Affectionately known as “Rye,” Alice was raised in Seaboard, North Carolina, where her vibrant spirit and warm personality began to shine. She attended Coates School and graduated from Gumberry High School in Garysburg, NC. A naturally outgoing and energetic young woman, Rye enjoyed playing on the high school girls’ basketball team, dancing, and traveling—passions that would follow her throughout her life.

Her love for exploration led her to Norfolk, Virginia, where she met and married the love of her life, Marine Officer John Daughtry, a gentle giant whose strength and kindness matched her own. As a proud military wife, Alice embraced the opportunity to travel the world. Together, they built a life filled with adventure, love, and purpose, raising their three children—David, Tameka, and John (Jay) Daughtry II—while living in places such as Hawaii, Camp Lejeune, Washington D.C., and Norfolk.

Throughout her journeys, Rye developed a deep love for cooking and especially excelled in baking. Her Southern-style biscuits, towering cakes, flavorful cabbage dishes, and comforting chicken and dumplings became signature staples—beloved by family, friends, and communities from Virginia Beach to Hawaii, and eventually back home in Seaboard.

Rye shared a close bond with her mother, Lear, and their frequent trips to Washington, D.C. to visit her sister Louise (and husband Billy) were legendary. These excursions were filled with laughter, food, and family. Her car was always full of children—Ree, Carolyn, Wayne, Derrick, Jr. Barnes—and the trunk packed with delicious homemade meals. In later years, her grandchildren April, Johnathan, Johneka, Jesseka, and John (“Fat Man”) would become the regular companions on these cherished road trips.

In the 1990s, Alice returned to Seaboard to care for her aging mother and brother Mill. Her gift for cooking became a blessing to the community, where she worked at Turner’s Chicken Restaurant and later at the Broadnax Diner. She also reconnected with her family church, Bethlehem Baptist Church in Seaboard, where she proudly served on the Kitchen Committee.

Even in retirement, Rye never slowed down. She remained passionate about traveling, dancing, card games, playing the lottery, and of course, cooking. Her signature desserts—decadent chocolate cakes, coconut-pineapple confections, and sweet potato pies—were always in high demand for church events and family gatherings.

Alice devoted her life to caring for others—whether through a warm meal, a ride to an appointment, or a visit to the sick and shut-in. Her greatest joy was being "Grandma Alice," known for her loving kindness, life wisdom, and endless encouragement for her grandchildren to pursue education and their dreams.

She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Curtis and Lear Boone; her siblings Jean Boone, Woodrow Boone, Virginia Barnes (Lee), Louise Pair (Billy), and Millard Boone.

She leaves to cherish her memory:   Her three loving children: David Daughtry (Maxine), Tameka Daughtry, and John “Jay” Daughtry II; her devoted brother, Randolph “Duke” Boone (Leah) of Seaboard, North Carolina;  a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.

Alice “Rye” Vivian Boone Daughtry’s legacy of love, generosity, and joyful spirit will live on in all who knew her. She will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
