Alvin Squire Obituary

Memories are treasures no one can steal.

Death is the heartache nothing can heal.

Some may forget you now that you are gone,

But we shall remember you no matter how long.

Alvin Alonzo Squire, age 66, of Gaston, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, September 10th, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend, Alvin will be remembered for his warmth, charisma, and generous spirit that touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

Born on Tuesday, August 18th, 1959, to Linwood and Inell Squire, Alvin was a lifelong resident of Gaston, where he built a life deeply rooted in community and family. He was educated in the Northampton County Public School System and went on to cultivate strong relationships within the town he always called home. Alvin was a talented craftsman with a natural gift for carpentry. Whether building, repairing, or creating, he found great joy in working with his hands and never hesitated to lend his time and skills to help others. His passion for the outdoors and dedication to caring for his family were hallmarks of the life he lived.

Alvin served many years as a Correctional Officer for the Virginia Department of Corrections, a role he held with integrity and pride. Outside of work, his heart belonged to his family. For more than 38 years, he shared a loving and committed marriage with his wife, Hilda Maxine Squire. Together, they raised three sons: Desmon Squire (Martina) of Baltimore, Maryland; Todd Squire (Ashley) of Raleigh, North Carolina; and Marco Squire (Bernice) of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. Alvin was a proud grandfather to six grandchildren—Desiree, Caleb, and Joshua of Baltimore, Maryland, and Noah, Nova, and Nyla of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina—who brought him immense joy and whom he loved dearly.

In addition to his wife, children, and grandchildren, Alvin is survived by his parents Linwood and Inell Squire; siblings: Lorenzo Squire (Ree), Kirkwood Squire (Betty), and Sophia Squire, all of Gaston, North Carolina, and David Squire (Alfreda) of Columbia, South Carolina. He is also lovingly remembered by two sisters-in-law, Eunice Scott of Garysburg, North Carolina, and Laverne Squire of Santee, California, as well as his aunt, Velvet Moody of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. He leaves behind a large circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and friends, all of whom were touched by his kindness and lively spirit.

Alvin is now reunited in peace with his brother, Leviticus Squire, along with many other cherished loved ones who preceded him in death. Those who knew Alvin will remember his infectious sense of humor, outgoing nature, and his gift for making people feel welcome. He could strike up a conversation with anyone and was known for being funny, compassionate, and dependable. To many, he was more than a friend or relative—he was a father figure, a mentor, and a steady presence in their lives.

Alvin’s legacy of love, laughter, and craftsmanship will live on through his family and all those whose lives he touched. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
