“If I can help somebody as I travel along,
If I can help somebody in a word or a song
If I can help somebody from doing wrong,
No, my living shall not be in vain”
Audrey Mae Gatling Bottoms, the beloved daughter of Joe Henry Gatling and Helen Jennings, was born on August 2nd, 1931, in Pendleton, Northampton County, North Carolina. She received her education through the Northampton County Public School System.
Early in life, Audrey met and united in holy matrimony with the late Columbus “Shorty” Bottoms, a union blessed with seven children. As a devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Audrey cherished her family deeply and left a lasting impact on everyone who knew her. Known for her humility, love for roses, and dedication to tending her flowers, Audrey was a hardworking and kind-hearted woman—a true blessing to have in anyone’s corner.
Audrey joined Macedonia A.M.E. Church at a young age and remained a faithful member throughout her life. She instilled in her family a strong faith and belief in God. To know Audrey was to love her.
On Thursday, August 15th, 2024, Audrey peacefully transitioned from this earthly life to the presence of our Lord. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe Henry and Helen Gatling; her husband, Columbus Bottoms; her children, Lois, Mozell, Calonia, Mary Ann, and Verlie; her siblings, Bernard, Doretha, Helen Marie, and Syndonia; and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Sierra Bottoms, Darren Bottoms, Demarkus Person, Jermaine Newsome, and Shanita Mason.
Audrey leaves to cherish her memories her son, Stafford Bottoms of the home; her daughter, Ernestine Rogers (Willie); her sister, Gracie Futrell of Roanoke Rapids; her son-in-law, Rev. James Baker; her sister-in-law, Ella Mae Gatling; her brother-in-law, Junius Barnes; as well as her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
