Aussie Broadnax Obituary

“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”

 2 Timothy 4:7

AUSSIE MCLENDON 'MAC' BROADNAX, was born on Friday, April 9th, 1937, in Seaboard, North Carolina, to Henry and Lossie Curlear Jordan Broadnax, and passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 9th, 2024. His final days were spent in the care of Liberty Commons Nursing & Rehabilitation Center of Halifax County, with palliative support from Liberty Homecare & Hospice Services in Weldon, North Carolina.

Mac grew up in a religious family and joined Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church at a young age. His dedication to the church was unwavering, and he served on the Trustee Ministry, eventually becoming the esteemed Chairman. Mac graduated from Gumberry High School in Gumberry, North Carolina, and pursued an undergraduate degree in Physical Education at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro. Answering the call of duty, he was drafted into the United States Army and served a tour in Germany. After his military service, he completed his education at Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Public Administration.

Mac was deeply proud of Seaboard, enjoying drives around town, engaging with citizens, visiting friends, and sharing stories about the area. He was instrumental in the Seaboard Civic Group, promoting community relations and implementing programs for the town's betterment. His daughter, Jeneé, cherished accompanying him on these journeys, soaking in his knowledge and love for the town.

A dedicated Job Coach for the Choanoke Area Development Association (CADA), Mac found fulfillment in mentoring young people, helping them with job training and employment opportunities. His exceptional service earned him numerous recognitions and awards. He also served on the boards of the Choanoke Public Transportation Authority (CPTA) and the Northampton County Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission.

Mac was a music lover with an encyclopedic knowledge of musical artists and song release dates. He believed music was the "language of the spirit." His enthusiasm for baseball began with a local community team and continued through his college years at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and his service in the Army. An avid fan, he spent countless hours watching games and enjoyed his grandson's high school baseball games at Hillside High School in Durham, North Carolina.

Mac’s appreciation for agriculture, stemming from his farming background, blossomed into a passion for raising hogs and crafting delicious pork barbecue and sausage for his family and friends. He delighted in sending these culinary delights to out-of-state family and friends.

Mac will be remembered as a man of few words who honored his promises. His outstanding memory and gift of recollection made him the Broadnax Family Historian, preserving family stories for future generations. As the youngest and last sibling of the Broadnax Family, he assumed the role of patriarch with respect, admiration, and love from his family. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Mansfield, Henry Jr., Irvin, Richard, Bobby, Melvin, Gladys, Sallie Geran, Cleo, and Cecil.

Mac is survived by his wife, Carol Ward Broadnax of Seaboard, North Carolina; daughter, Crysta Jenee' Broadnax Hines; son-in-law, Brian O. Hines; three grandsons, Jordan Hines, Brian Hines, Jr., and Xavier Hines; granddaughter, Dominique Hines; and great-grandchildren, Jordan Hines, Jr. and Serenity Shirel Hines. He also leaves behind nieces and nephews, Valarie B. White, Darien B. Morgan, Ruth Anda Eaton, Sona B. Scott, Melvetta Broadnax Taylor, Phil Angelo Broadnax, Cecil Broadnax, Jr., Theodore Faison and Robert D. Faison, a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.
