Beatrice Ponton Brown, affectionately known as “Bea,” was born on Saturday, March 16th, 1946, in Pleasant Hill, North Carolina, to the late Jimmie Ponton, Sr. and Viola Ponton. On Saturday, July 26th, 2025, she peacefully transitioned from this life while under the care of Beaufont Health & Rehabilitation Center in Richmond, Virginia.
At an early age, Bea accepted Christ and joined Faithful Band Missionary Baptist Church in Pleasant Hill, North Carolina. She was a talented seamstress by trade and found great joy in simple pleasures, such as driving around and taking in the beauty of the scenery around her. Bea was united in holy matrimony to the late Charlie Brown, and together they were blessed with two beautiful daughters, Charlene and Rose. Her love for the Lord was deep and unwavering, and she cherished her family above all else.
Known for her affectionate nature and radiant smile, Bea had a warm presence that could light up any room. Even as her illness progressed, she continued to smile and lean on her strong faith in God, remaining steadfast in her trust that He would see her through. Her strength, spirit, and devotion le an indelible mark on those who knew and loved her.
Bea leaves behind a legacy of love and faith. She is survived by her devoted daughters: Charlene B. Jeffers (Charles, Sr.) of Henrico, Virginia, and Rose Ann Brown Efaw of Richmond, Virginia; and Michelle Ponton of Jackson, North Carolina, whom she loved as a daughter. She also leaves behind five beloved grandchildren: Brianna Efaw, Charlie Efaw (Ashley), Jessica Jeffers, Joanne Jeffers, and Charles Jeffers, Jr.; and three great-grandchildren: Kalilo Efaw, Nyoemi Efaw, and Cartier Efaw. Bea had a special bond with her “bonus” grandchildren, Darius “Smiley” Edwards, and DeMonte Edwards, whom she lovingly claimed as her own.
She is also survived by her two sisters, Elizabeth Newsome of Garysburg, North Carolina and Ruth Hicks of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina; two sisters-in-law, Virginia Ponton (wife of the late Jimmie, Jr.) of Seaboard, North Carolina, and Ernestine Ponton (wife of the late Richard) of Murfreesboro, North Carolina. Bea had a cherished circle of lifelong friends, including Geraldine Britt of Seaboard, North Carolina, Emily “EmEm” Barber of Gumberry, North Carolina, and Shirley Turner of Seaboard, North Carolina. Her memory will be lovingly remembered by a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, cousins, and many other relatives and friends.
Bea’s presence, her unwavering faith, and her enduring love for her family will be deeply missed. Her life was a testament to grace, warmth, and resilience.
