Bernice (Person) Grant

Mrs. Bernice Person Grant, affectionately known by many for her warm spirit and love of family, was born on July 20th, 1942, to the late Mary Sue Person and Harry Lee Person. At just three weeks old, she was lovingly raised by her grandmother, the late Cornelia Jane Evans Whitfield, affectionately known as "Ma Grown," whose care and guidance helped shape the remarkable woman Bernice became. She peacefully departed this life on Wednesday, June 24th, 2026.

Born and reared in Boykins, Southampton County, Virginia, Bernice received her education through the Southampton County Public School System. At an early age, she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and united with Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Boykins, Virginia. After making her home in Murfreesboro, North Carolina for many years, she became a faithful member of New Beginnings Baptist Church, where she served diligently on the Usher Board for as long as her health allowed.

Throughout her life, Bernice was known for her strong work ethic. She worked as a cook at Dockside in Franklin, Virginia, before beginning a long and dedicated career with Naricott Industries in Boykins, Virginia, where she faithfully served for more than 30 years. Even after retirement, she continued working at Duck Thru in Aulander, North Carolina.

Bernice truly enjoyed life and had a special gift for staying informed about everything happening in her community. If you wanted to know the latest news, all you had to do was ask—she was always ready to "give you the tea" with a smile. She loved watching television, especially court reality shows, Judge Judy, and In the Heat of the Night. As she embraced technology later in life, she developed a love for playing games on her iPad. No matter where she went, she could always be found carrying a bag filled with her two favorite things—her treasured iPad and her favorite snacks.

In 1964, Bernice was united in holy matrimony with the late Curtis S. Grant. Together, they lovingly raised four children and built a home centered on faith, love, and family. Bernice cherished every opportunity to spend time with her family and friends, but her greatest pride and joy were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought endless happiness to her life.

Bernice was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Curtis S. Grant; her parents, Mary Sue Person and Harry Lee Person; her grandmother, Cornelia Jane Evans Whitfield ("Ma Grown"); her son, Curtis Person; and her siblings, Earl Person, Gilbert Person, Joseph Lundy, Jr., Elizabeth "Sis" Boone, Melvyn Rimm, and Bobby William Lundy.

She leaves to cherish her precious memories her devoted children, Mary Sue and Melissa, both of the home, and Glenn (Kendra) of Germany. She also leaves two children-at-heart, Shirley Lynch and Marty Lynch; her devoted sister, Mae C. Flythe; her brother, Johnny White; her God-son, JT Austin; her beloved grandchildren, Dr. Mozell Person, Quonte Newsome, Stacy Lucas (Maurice), Charnice McNair (Troy), Lakita Grant, Jourdan Person, and Shamika Futrell; and her cherished great-grandchildren, Amiya, Troy Jr., Stassi, Lennox, Nolan, and Khyler.

She also leaves to mourn her passing her sister-in-law, Mildred Lundy; her daughter-in-law, Linda Person; her devoted friend, Janice Boone; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever treasure the memories they shared with her.

Bernice's life was a testament to faith, perseverance, love, and laughter. Her unwavering devotion to her family, her welcoming spirit, and her unforgettable personality will be deeply missed but lovingly remembered by all who were blessed to know her.
