“I am leaving you with a gift —peace of mind and heart. And the peace
I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.
~ John 14:27 NLT
BURNELL BUFFALOE JACKSON was born on Thursday, October 9th, 1952, in Northampton County, North Carolina, to the late Lewis Pernell Buffaloe and Lillie Mae Kee Buffaloe. She received her education in the public schools of Northampton County. ‘Nell’, as she was affectionately called by her family and friends, was employed with Regional Home Health Care, where she served faithfully as a personal care aide until her retirement.
At an early age, Nell united in Christian fellowship with Roanoke Salem Missionary Baptist Church, where she served devotedly as an usher until her health began to decline. She was also a proud member of the Roanoke Valley Chapter of the Asa Philip Randolph Institute.
“She’s in the sun and rain, the air you breathe, with every breath you take. She sings a song of hope and cheer; there’s no more pain, no more fear. You’ll see her in the clouds above.”
Nell was a loving and caring woman with a heart of gold. She would do anything she could to help anyone in need. Her friends often asked her to prepare her famous chicken salad, which was always made with love and was always delicious.
On Thursday, February 5th, 2026, while in the care of UNC Nash Health Care Center of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, God, in His infinite wisdom, called our beloved Nell from labor to reward. Released from the suffering of this present time, her earthly service was complete, and she now rejoices in the victory of eternal life.
In addition to her parents, Nell was preceded in death by her siblings: Lewis Buffaloe, Juanita Buffaloe Harrell, Roy Lee Buffaloe, Willie Mack Buffaloe, Gladys Jean Buffaloe, and Gracie Mae Buffaloe Roberts.
“A golden heart stopped beating; it broke our hearts to see you go. God only takes the best. Though we loved you dearly, God opened the windows of heaven. We miss you. Our home is lonely, and those who remain are struck by the bitter pain of death, yet comforted by God’s promise that He will wipe away all tears and that we will sing of His goodness."
Nell’s precious memory will forever be cherished by her loving husband of 54 years, Stephen Douglas Jackson; one son, Stanley Lewis Jackson of the home in Jackson, North Carolina; one daughter, Iris Michelle Jackson of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina; grandchildren, Danylah Jackson, Jaquan Jackson (Ashley), and Stephen Smith; great-grandchildren, Ava Jackson and Paisley Jackson; siblings, Sylvia Ann Stephenson of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, and John Harvey Buffaloe of Berlin, Germany; a special nephew, Jamauri Reid, whom she loved dearly and who was always willing to lend a helping hand; a special cousin, Jerelene White Britt; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
“Sad is the parting no one can tell, So sudden on earth the sorrow fell. The blow was hard, the shock severe, To part with one we loved so dear. Yet dearer still as days depart, Her loving memory will forever live within our hearts.”
