“Upon life’s journey, we are given opportunities to plant seeds of goodness, seeds
of kindness, and seeds of blessings that bestow our hearts, our work, and our
being. For those that sow the fields with loving generosity, so shall they reap the
abundant harvest of eternal life.”
Carl Lee Avent, Sr., affectionately known as “Bob” by his family and friends, was born on Saturday, April 6th, 1946, in Northampton County, North Carolina, to the late William Lee and Katherine Avent Lee. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, Carl lived a life defined by kindness, hard work, and a joyful spirit.
Carl received his formal education through the public schools of Northampton County. From a young age, he understood the value of hard work, beginning his career on the farm. He later dedicated many years of service to the Pleasant Hill Nursing Home and Vulcan Materials in Skippers, Virginia, where he worked as a skilled welder for 37 years until his well-earned retirement in May 2008.
Beyond his professional work, Carl had a heart for service. He proudly volunteered with the Gaston Fire Department for several years, always ready to lend a helping hand to his community. He also had a deep love for the open road, whether behind the wheel of his truck or cruising on his motorcycle, finding peace and freedom in every ride.
On Tuesday, November 17th, 1970, Carl was united in holy matrimony to the love of his life, the former Emma Broady. Together, they built a beautiful life and were blessed with five wonderful children.
On Tuesday, June 24th, 2025, while in the compassionate care of ECU Medical Center in Greenville, North Carolina, Carl peacefully transitioned from this earthly life to eternal rest. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandson, Larry Wayne Avent, Jr., and his brothers, Thomas Avent and Isiah Lee.
Carl’s legacy lives on through those who will forever cherish his memory: his devoted wife, Emma Avent of the home; his loving children, Emma Jean Avent of Pleasant Hill, North Carolina, Larry Avent, Sr. (Janine) of South Carolina, Vernon Avent (Sherita) of Georgia, Jill Avent of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, Carl Lee Avent, Jr. of Pleasant Hill, North Carolina and Michael Broady (Annie) of Margarettsville, North Carolina; eighteen cherished grandchildren: Daiz, Kendreyatta, Me’Shawn, Jeffrey, My’ana, Zyier, Chardonae, Aimiee, Xavier, Jamarya, Javier, Nyzieme, August, Mariah, Amir, Montrell, Shaquille, and Bella; twenty adored great-grandchildren; his sisters, Eve High of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, and Nora Johnson of Gaston, North Carolina; his brothers, Herman Lee of Pleasant Hill, North Carolina, Christopher Lee (Annie) of Pleasant Hill, North Carolina, and Marvin Lee of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina.
He is also lovingly remembered by his sisters-in-law, Glady Smith and Dozine Robinson of Pleasant Hill, North Carolina, Betty Holt and Irene Lee of Gaston, North Carolina; his brothers-in-law, Leroy Broady and Allen Broady of Pleasant Hill, North Carolina, and Henry Broady of Gaston, North Carolina; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
Carl “Bob” Avent, Sr. lived a life rooted in love, integrity, and quiet strength. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate to know him.
