Obituary

“I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.

My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.”

~ Psalm 121:1-2

Carrie Jeanette Powell Gunther, daughter of the late Andrew Powell and Margaret Louise Cumbo Powell, was born on Tuesday, December 16, 1941, in Jackson (Northampton County), North Carolina.

At an early age, Carrie accepted Christ and joined the Antioch Baptist Church of Jackson. She attended Antioch School and W. S. Creecy School, Rich Square, North Carolina, where she graduated - Class of 1961. Afterwhich, she matriculated at NC A&T State University.

As an adult, New York became Carrie’s beloved home. There she started her career, as a domestic worker, and then became employed by the United States Postal Service - Grand Central Post Office, as a mail clerk. She was also a proud member of the American Postal Workers Union. During her tenure, she met and married her beloved husband, Wilfred Gunther. They shared a home in Rego Park - Queens, New York. Carrie retired, as a payroll clerk, and in 1995 returned to North Carolina; making her home in Weldon. She rekindled her membership with the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. She enjoyed planning church events and serving as Choir President. As life progressed, Carrie returned to her homestead in Jackson to provide care for her mother and lived there until her health declined.

As a mother, grandmother, sister, niece and cousin; Carrie loved her family. She enjoyed traveling, making her grandchildren laugh, eating good food, shopping and talking on the phone. During her youth, she was given the name ‘Jankie Lee’, by her grandmother, after a singer on one of the records from the “ole piccolo”.

Oh, they tell me of a home, Far beyond the skies. Oh, they tell me of a home, So far away. Yes, they tell me of a home, Where no storm clouds rise. Oh, they tell me, Yes, they tell me of an uncloudy day. On Wednesday, July 26, 2023, while in the care of ECU Health Medical Center, Greenville, North Carolina, God lifted Carrie Jeanette Powell Gunter from this world of sin, sorrow and pain, to a place of peace and sweet eternal rest. Her seeds are well-sown; her service on earth is complete, and she’s now basking in the victory and triumph of eternal life. In addition to her parents and loving husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Jennifer L. Powell.

Precious memories will forever linger in the hearts of: a son, Reverend Richard A. Powell, Sr. (Reverend Mary J. Powell); three daughters-at-heart, Leanor, Angela and Valerie; seven grandchildren, Margaret Nichole, Richard (Jaleesa), Ebonie, Cheyenne, Felicia, Christopher and Wilfred; fourteen great-grandchildren; an adopted brother, Pernell (Lynn); her aunt and best friend, Hilda Cotten; a host of cousins, relatives and friends.
