Obituary

With humble submission to the will of God, we pause to honor the life of Cary Fitzgerald Long. He began his journey through life on Wednesday, March 4, 1964 in Northampton County, NC. He was born to Carolyn Long Ramsey and the late John “Bud” Essie Odom. Educated in the Northampton County public school system, he graduated from Northampton County High School East, Class of 1983.

As a child, Cary loved playing basketball in the backyard and in the streets with his friends. He went on to play basketball in Middle School for Jackson Eastside Elementary School. He continued to play in high school where he started on the Junior Varsity team for 3 games before moving up to Varsity as the starting center. He was one of the leading scorers on the team until he finished his career in 1982. Cary attracted interest from Coach ‘K’ of Duke University regarding him coming to Duke to play basketball.

Cary accepted any challenge and was an outgoing person until his health began to decline. After that he would stay close to home and watch his favorite teams and shows on television. He also enjoyed hanging out with his ride or die buddy, Bennie Williams.

At an early age, Cary accepted Christ as his personal Savior and joined Branches Chapel Baptist Church in Rich Square, NC, under the leadership of Rev. Brown. Throughout his career Cary was employed by Perdue Farms, Union Camp and the Regulator Marina.

On Tuesday, August 8, 2023, while in the comfort of his home, Cary peacefully transitioned from this earthly life unto life eternal. He is now united with: his father, John Odom; three sisters, Cynthia Branch, Jennifer Vaughan and Pamela Odom Hawkins; maternal grandmother, Ellen Ann Long; paternal grandparents, James and Mary Odom and extended brother, Joel Ramsey.

Though his light may eternally descend, this God is our God and he has promised to be our guide until the very end. Though the pain may be too much to bear God is love and he will walk with us in our deepest despair. We who remain with faith and assurance that God will see us through are: his wife Doris Long; his children, Gervaise Long and Xavionne Long; one grandson, Deasyn Burnett; brothers, Jeffrey Long (Joyce) of Pleasant Hill, NC and John ‘Squeak’ Shoulders (Paula) of Princeton, NC; one sister, Wanda Crawley (Ed) of Durham, NC; one extended sister, Felicia Greene of Raleigh, NC; brothers-at-heart, Charles Wayne Harris and Robbie Ramsey; aunts, Ola M. Deloatch and Kathy Long both of Jackson, NC; uncle, James A. Odom, Jr. (Doris) of Jackson, NC; great aunts, Geneva Kee of Rich Square, NC and Eleanor Bragg (John) of Jackson, NC; seven nieces, Ebony Mann Holland, Jenna Long, Brittany Ballard, Jessica Vaughan, Tosha Shoulders, Yolanda Shoulders and Shaquela Shoulders; six nephews, Jeffrey Long, Jr. Caleb Crawley, Robbie Vaughan, Patrick Shoulders, Christopher Shoulders and John Shoulders, Jr.; ten great-nieces; six great-nephews; a host of other relatives and friends.
