THE LIFE AND LEGACY
OF
Casper James Smith
“Upon life’s journey, we are given opportunities to plant seeds of goodness, seeds of kindness, and seeds of blessings that bestow our hearts, our work and our being. For those that sow the fields with loving generosity, so shall they reap the abundant harvest of eternal life.”
With humbled submission to the will of God, we stand with this precious Smith family to honor the life of Casper James Smith, who was a loving husband, father, brother, uncle and friend.
Casper was born on the 18th day of October 1937, in Halifax County, North Carolina, to the parentage of the late Victor and Corena Mitchell Smith. During the earlier years of his life, he accepted Christ and was baptized at the Mary’s Chapel Baptist Church of Scotland Neck, North Carolina. It was there that his love for God was strengthened and spiritual gifts were nurtured. While on his spiritual walk with Christ, Casper was an avid member of the Usher’s Ministry. Not only did he serve as an usher at Mary’s Chapel, but he also took the time to serve as an usher at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church of Jackson, North Carolina, as well. He internalized the word of God in Psalm 84:10, “For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than dwell in the tents of wickedness.”
As his life flourished, Casper was united in Holy Matrimony to the love of his life, Gertrude Johnson on June 11, 1988. Their marriage was built on a devoted love for 31 years. His love for Gertrude was precious and he treated her like a queen! He truly adored his children and grandchildren and found much joy in spending quality time with them. Seeing the need to help provide for his family, Casper became gainfully employed with Alexander Food Center and Hardee’s Restaurant - he absolutely enjoyed the work that he did. Casper also had a strong passion for automobiles and the upkeep of them, often times you could find him washing and detailing the vehicles that he was driving to church or even around town. He had to make sure that his car(s) were pristine!
He’s in the sun, the wind, the rain, he’s in the air you breathe with every breath you take. He sings a song of hope and cheer, there’s no more pain, no more fear. You’ll see him in the clouds above, hear him whisper words of love, you’ll be together before long, until then listen for his song. On Wednesday, August 12, 2020; while in the care of Accordius Health at Scotland Manor in Scotland Neck, Casper’s life peacefully transitioned into heavenly eternal rest - into a building not made with hands and eternal in the heavens. His seeds are well sown, her service on earth is complete, and he now experiences the victory and triumph of eternal life and we can still hear him saying, “I am at peace, my soul’s at rest, there is no need for tears, for with your love I was so blessed, for all those many years.”
Though his light may eternally descend, this God is our God and he has promised to be our up guide until the very end. Though the pain may be almost too much to bear, God is love and He will walk with us in our deepest despair. We who remain with faith and assurance that God will see us through are: Gertrude Johnson Smith of the home; son, Frederick Smith; son-at-heart, Daniel Smith: granddaughter, Latonia Pittman; great, grandchildren, Triquastla Clark and Triqual Clark; sister, Willie Mae Smith Hallums; sisters and brothers-in-law; Evelyn Johnson, Rev.
