Catherine Artis Obituary

“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart.

And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.

 ~ John‬ ‭14‬‬:‭27‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Catherine Beatrice Artis began her journey through life on Saturday, August 3, 1957, in Jackson, North Carolina (Northampton County), born to the late Roosevelt Davis and Mary Magdalene "Sis" Artis.

From an early age, Catherine embraced her faith, accepting Christ and being baptized at Boone’s Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Jackson, North Carolina. She received her education in the Northampton County public schools before embarking on a career that took her to Georgia and Florida, where she worked as a private duty chef. Renowned for her culinary skills, Catherine was an excellent cook, and many can attest to the unforgettable taste of her dishes. Her love for cooking extended beyond her family, as she frequently hosted gatherings that welcomed not only family but the entire community and beyond.

Catherine was a generous soul, giving not only material things but also her time and talents to anyone in need. Her strength and tenacity were evident in the way she persevered through her own challenges to be there for her family and loved ones. She always ensured that those around her had fresh vegetables and fruit, often traveling for hours to source these items, which she shared freely and joyfully.

A lover of life’s simple pleasures, Catherine was an avid fan of wrestling and old westerns. Before her health began to decline, she enjoyed attending Southern Soul Shows, delighting in performances by artists like Marvin Sease, Roy C., and Sir Charles Jones. Catherine also had a passion for playing bingo and spades, often spending hours engaged in friendly competition, where she rarely lost a game of spades.

On Wednesday, August 28, 2024, while in the care of Nash General - UNC Hospital in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, Catherine quietly slipped into eternal rest. She now resides in a place of peace, free from pain, resting from the cares and sufferings of this life. In addition to her parents, Catherine was preceded in death by three brothers, Willie Lee ‘Chubby’ Artis, Jimmie Artis, and Rudolph ‘Rudy/Fimp’ Artis;  two sisters, Shirley Jean ‘Tootsie’ Artis Jordan (Coley) and Joyce Artis; Cecil Lucas, her companion for many years and several other relatives, who were near and dear to her heart.

Though our hearts are heavy with grief, we find comfort in God’s promise to wipe away all tears. The fond memories of Catherine’s well-lived and well-loved life will forever be cherished by her devoted and caring siblings: Coley Artis (Jeanette) of Hyattsville, Maryland, Joe Wilson Artis (Gwen) of Jonesboro, Georgia, Josephine A. Faison of Jackson, North Carolina, Emily Shoulars of Parkton, North Carolina, Sandra Davis of Kenly, North Carolina and Elmo Jack Davis (Patricia) of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. She also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews; whom she loved very dearly, other relatives and friends who will continue to honor her memory.
