Charlie Long Obituary

For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.

~ II Timothy 4: 6 - 8

On Monday, August 5, 1957, life was bestowed upon Charlie Long, as he was born to the parentage of the late Allen and Sarah Long in Newark, New Jersey. Growing up in the Long residence, he was the youngest of his siblings. He attended the public schools of Newark, New Jersey, finally graduating from the West Side High School in 1975. While he attended high school, he was involved in sports and was a star basketball player at WSHS aka the “Rough Riders”. After high school, Charlie furthered his education by attending Lincoln University of Penn and Jersey City University of New Jersey.

Charlie accepted Christ and joined the Beulah Baptist Church Newark, New Jersey, under the leadership of Rev. Gerald Dickson. It was there that his love for God deepened and spiritual gifts were nurtured. Not only was Charlie working for Christ, but he was also gainfully employed with Bayon Marine Base for over 19 years. Afterwards, he worked part-time at UPS and Fedex-Express.

Charlie was summoned home to eternal rest and peace on Thursday, September 9, 2021, at approximately 10:40 A.M. by Jesus Christ; while in the care of University Hospital; Newark, New Jersey. His weary hours and days of pain are now over. There is no need to worry or weep, for he has crossed the bar. As he transitioned from our care and into God’s keeping, he now resides safely in the arms of Jesus and we can hear his spirit utter these words: “Don’t sit and think that you didn’t do all you could for me; for I am now in a place of quiet rest, comfort, full release, joy, and nothing, but peace.” In addition to his parents, Charlie was preceded in death by his sister, Lathoria V. Davis Magee.

We who remain are struck by the pain of death, but satisfied with the promise made by God, that He would wipe all tears from our eyes are: his daughter, Brittany Davis Long and granddaughter, Destiny both of Westfield, New Jersey; sister, Lena Sanders (Kermit) of Passaic, New Jersey; aunt, Georgia Davis of Brooklyn, New York; special friend, Vicky Baker of Irvington, New Jersey; two nephews and four great-nephews of Atlanta, Georgia; a host of cousins, relatives and longtime friends.
