We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.
~ II Corinthians 5:8 (KJV)
Charlie Lee Walker, Jr., commonly known as ‘Bug’, was born on September 20th, 1947 to the late Charlie Lee and Barbara Walker, Sr. in Southampton County, Virginia. He departed this earthly life and entered into eternal rest on September 30th, 2023 in his home in Boykins, Virginia. He received his education in Southampton County Public Schools and was well known in his school and home community.
At an early age, Charlie moved to Landover, Maryland, where he worked as a butcher for many years. He took extraordinary pride in his career as a butcher, while employed with the A & P Corporation. He considered himself one of the best. He later relocated to Virginia and was employed with Norshipco Shipyard in Norfolk, Virginia, where he dedicated 27 years of service before retiring.
Charlie loved God, his family and community. To Phyllis A. Walker, his wife of 39 years, he was affectionately known as “Big C”. Charlie and Phyllis created many memories together as they supported their family during special activities, family functions and celebrations. Charlie loved cooking, hunting, and fishing. He would often bless his family and friends with his delicious cooking and most notably his homemade barbeque. As a cook, Charlie would often share his recipes and his famous all-time words were, “Put some Liquid Smoke on it”. He believed that it enhanced the flavor of almost everything. He loved sharing stories with his family and friends. Charlie could spend hours reminiscing about his days hunting in the woods, on a fishing bank, life in Boykins, his hometown or of those he loved. Time spent with Charlie would be filled with great laughter, unforgettable memories and unending words of wisdom. Most often than not you would hear him say, “I’m telling you what I know now.” Charlie loved life and his presence was felt wherever he went. If ever you needed anything, he was always willing to help.
Early in life Charlie accepted Christ and joined Rising Star Baptist Church, Branchville, Virginia. He remained a member there for many years before joining New Bethel Baptist Church, Boykins, Virginia. While a member at New Bethel, Charlie worked in many capacities. He was a deacon, member of the male choir and a trustee. Charlie was a faithful and dependable church member who was always willing to help wherever needed. He could often be seen walking down the aisles speaking to and greeting all who entered. He truly loved his church and remained there until his health began to decline.
‘Bug’ was preceded in death by: his parents, Charlie and Barbara Walker; sister, Barbara Jean Bynum and two nephews, Brian Walker and Mario Lashley. He leaves to cherish his memory: his wife, Phyllis Walker; children, Latoya McClenny of Atlanta, GA, Tarsha Jones (Alvin) of Chesapeake, VA, Anita Riddick (Jamon) of Suffolk, VA, Jonathan Floyd of Providence, RI and Timothy Floyd of Radcliff, KY; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three siblings, Jeffrey Walker (Josette) of Elizabeth City, NC, Ralph Walker (Kathy) of Chesapeake, VA and Hazel Lorraine Walker Blunt (Ernest) of Virginia Beach, VA; and three dear sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law; a host of loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
