“If I can help somebody as I travel along, If I can help somebody in a word or a song
If I can help somebody from doing wrong, No, my living shall not be in vain”
Today, we honor and celebrate the life of Clementine Grant Edwards, a woman whose love knew no bounds. As a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, she touched the hearts of many with her boundless compassion and infectious joy.
Clementine, affectionately known as "Clem," was born on Thursday, October 30th, 1930, in Jackson, North Carolina, the cherished daughter of Johnnie Grant and Joanna Stewart Grant. Her journey through life was marked by an unwavering commitment to family, a passion for education, and a deep desire to bring happiness to those around her.
Educated in the Northampton County School System, Clem's thirst for knowledge led her to Fayetteville State Teachers College in Fayetteville, North Carolina, now Fayetteville State University. Armed with her education, she returned to Jackson and became a dedicated teacher in the Northampton County School System. Over 32 years, she imparted knowledge and wisdom at Gaston, Garysburg, Jackson Eastside, and Woodland Elementary schools, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of countless students. Her affiliation with the North Carolina Association of Classroom Teachers attested to her commitment to the educational community.
Clementine's faith journey began early in life when she accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior. A loyal member of Piney Grove Baptist Church in Jackson, she served as an Usher, Women's Choir member, and Sunday School Teacher, until her health declined. Her unwavering faith and commitment to God shone through in every aspect of her life.
In the course of life, Clementine encountered the love of her life, Willie Buck Edwards, with whom she shared 65 years of enduring love. Their union blessed them with a son, Mandel Curry Edwards Sr. A devoted advocate of education, Clem took immense pride in witnessing her son and grandchildren achieve their college degrees.
Her home was a haven of love and warmth, always open to family and friends. Clementine found joy in music, singing, playing the piano, reading, and the simple pleasures of watching television. Yet, her true happiness radiated when she was teaching young minds, leaving an enduring impact on generations.
On January 1st, 2024, while under the tender care of her son, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter in Durham, North Carolina, Clementine peacefully transitioned from her earthly labors to her eternal rest. She was preceded in death by her parents, Johnnie and Joanna Grant and her beloved husband, Willie Buck Edwards.
Clementine leaves behind a legacy of love cherished by: her sister, Rachel Walden of Jackson, North Carolina; her son, Mandel Curry Edwards Sr. and daughter-in-law, Tincye Martin Edwards of Durham, North Carolina; granddaughter, Nikki Marie Daniels of Atlanta, Georgia; granddaughter, Dr. Tamara Anita Edwards of Durham, North Carolina; grandson, Mandel Curry Edwards Jr. of Durham, North Carolina; a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The void left by Clementine's absence will be felt deeply, but her spirit lives on in the cherished memories and the enduring love she bestowed upon all who were fortunate enough to know her. May she rest in eternal peace.
