Craig Byron Turner

  CRAIG BYRON TURNER, age 48, of Conway, North Carolina, took his first flight into this world on Thursday, May 13th, 1976, arriving smoothly at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, North Carolina. His journey began with no turbulence, a foreshadowing of the grace and warmth he would bring to those around him. On Wednesday, December 11th, 2024, at 11:56 PM, Craig boarded his final first-class flight from the comfort of his family home. With his mother wishing him a safe journey, he stepped into eternity, adorned in heavenly garments and holding his “Well Done” ticket to paradise. While his departure was earlier than we wished, we find comfort knowing he has safely arrived, as to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.

A Life Well-Lived… Craig graduated in 1994 from Northampton County High School East in Conway, North Carolina. A talented athlete and musician, he played baseball and left an indelible mark as one of the best trumpet players the school had ever seen. He furthered his education at Elizabeth City State University, where he was a proud member of the Vikings Band. Though Craig eventually realized college was not his path, it launched him into a life of adventure, marked by avid travel, a keen mind for numbers, and cherished moments with family and friends.

Craig’s passion for sports extended beyond his school years. He was a dedicated softball player and an all-around sports enthusiast. Known for his quick wit, hearty laugh, and affectionate smile, Craig was a pillar of positivity. Whether resolving sibling disputes as the family’s “umpire” or spreading joy among friends, Craig’s warmth was ever-present. To his family, he was affectionately called “Pooh Pooh,” “Lil Bae,” and “Credit.”

Career & Contributions… Craig thrived in the world of finance, working as a Staff Accountant, Benefits Analyst, and Senior Accounts Payable Specialist. He spent many years with United Airlines until his health began to decline. A white-collar professional through and through, Craig’s true element was behind a desk, pen in hand, crunching numbers with precision.

Craig’s infectious spirit carried over into every aspect of his life. A lover of good music, gaming on his Xbox, and lively gatherings, he knew how to seize the joy in every moment. Whether he was attending church, appreciating a “good sangin’” choir, or simply spending time with loved ones, Craig lived life to the fullest.

A Life Well LIVED, A Life Well LOVED! Family & Loved Ones… Craig leaves to cherish many memories: his loving mother, Linda Turner Harmon of the home; his father, Milton ‘Leon’ Vinson of Murfreesboro, North Carolina; his brothers, Christopher Turner of Conway, North Carolina and Dominique Lee of Pendleton, North Carolina; and his sister, Simene’ Walden of Brentwood, Maryland. He also leaves behind two cherished nieces, Zayona Edwards of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina and Tia Blunt of Baltimore, Maryland. Craig is also survived by a host of aunts and uncles, including: Terry Turner of Pendleton, North Carolina, Timothy Turner of Conway, North Carolina, Curtis Turner of Greenville, North Carolina, Willis Wood, Jr. (Genora) of Mapleton, North Carolina, Wilson Johnson of Orlando, Florida, Elliott Johnson of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, Tracy Woodley (Shayvonna) of Woodland, North Carolina, Reginald Woodley and Bobby Woodley both of Conway, North Carolina, Kelvin Woodley of South Carolina, Sandra McNeil (Ernest) of Clayton, North Carolina, Shelia Turner of East Point, Georgia, Debbie Grant (Michael) of Fairburn, Georgia, Marilyn Harris (Clarence) of Murfreesboro, North Carolina, Darlene Deloatch (Lionel) of Mapleton, North Carolina, Mary Olivia Long of Margarettsville, North Carolina, Dorothy Riddick of Murfreesboro, North Carolina, and Alda Mae Woods of Ahoskie, North Carolina.

Craig also leaves behind a host of cousins who were like siblings, great-nieces and nephews, amazing friends, and three best friends: Bobbie Baldwin, Jamal Williams, and Montre McKinney. His CAPS Softball League teammates and United Airlines family also mourn his loss.

Craig was preceded in death by his grandparents, Willis Wood, Elizabeth Woodley, and Jessie Mae Turner; his great-grandmother, Lillie Mae Jordan; aunts Sharon Turner, Linda Lassiter, Gloria Wood, and Clementine Ruffin; his uncle Ralph Ruffin; and his stepfather and “Pops,” Kenneth Harmon.

A Legacy of Faith & Strength… In his final years, Craig drew closer to Christ, finding strength and peace in his faith. Even during challenging times, he remained selfless, never wanting his loved ones to worry. His enduring resilience and unshakable faith remind us of the words he often lived by: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful. And now the prize awaits me—the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on the day of his return.”

Craig Byron Turner’s 48 years on Earth were filled with love, laughter, and unforgettable memories. His journey touched countless lives, leaving an indelible mark that will be cherished forever. While we grieve his loss, we celebrate the beautiful life he lived and the eternal peace he has found.
