DeCater LeSalvadore Cherry, of Henry Kee Road, near Seaboard, North Carolina, passed away on Tuesday, July 23rd, 2024, at the age of 62. DeCater was gainfully employed all of his adult life, working in various occupations, including as an auto-diesel mechanic and serving in the United States Navy. He retired from the State of North Carolina after dedicating 20 years to various state government agencies.
Born on Wednesday, September 6th, 1961, DeCater was the son of the late Cater Salvadore Cherry and Louise Vaughan Cherry of Henry Kee Road, near Seaboard, North Carolina.
DeCater is survived by and was previously married to his loving wife, Phyllis Turner of Garner, North Carolina. Prior to his marriage to Phyllis, he was briefly married to Geraldine Harris of Weldon, North Carolina.
He is also survived by his siblings: his brother, Vladimir ‘Len’ Cherry of Frisco, Texas, his brother, Demarqus ‘Don’ Cherry and wife, Rhonda (née Batts) of Simpsonville, South Carolina, his brother, Melchizedek ‘Mel’ Cherry and wife, Denise (née Williams) of Seaboard, North Carolina, his sister, Alicianiah ‘Lisa’ Cherry Hossein and husband, Mohamed of Nashville, Tennessee, and his brother, Gamaliel ‘Dan’ Cherry and wife, Erika (née McCallister) of Missouri City, Texas.
DeCater’s legacy continues through his nephews: Cameron Cherry (Demarqus), Zephaniah Lamar Lawrence (Alicianiah), Dorian Micheal Lawrence (Alicianiah), Ahmad Alolify Hossein (Alicianiah), and Kaeden Demel Cherry (Melchizedek); and his nieces: Sydney Cherry (Demarqus), Melodee Yasmine Cherry (Melchizedek), Kaiyah Melise Cherry (Melchizedek), Zariah Giselle Cherry (Gamaliel), Zoe Genevieve Cherry (Gamaliel), and Zion Sinai Cherry (Gamaliel).
He is further survived by his maternal uncle, Kenneth Vaughan of Conway, North Carolina; his paternal uncle, Hollis Cherry of Rich Square, North Carolina; and his paternal aunts, Doris Brown of Poughkeepsie, New York, and Sarluta Anderson, also of Poughkeepsie, New York. Additionally, he leaves behind a great many paternal and maternal cousins.
DeCater was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
