The journey of life is filled with rough roads, tough challenges, and hills that are hard to climb. Eley McCoy Newsome, Sr. embarked on this journey a long time ago, and there is no doubt in his mind that he made Jesus his choice.
Eley was born on Tuesday, March 9th, 1948, in Pendleton, North Carolina, to the parentage of the late James Ralph and Rushie Ann Peebles Newsome. Early in life, he dedicated himself to Christ and joined Zoar Missionary Baptist Church in Pendleton, where he served as a faithful servant of God in various capacities. Eley was an ordained Deacon, Superintendent of the Sunday School, Usher, member of the Senior Choir and Male Chorus. His commitment extended to the Food Pantry, Drama, and Dance Ministries.
Educated in the public schools of Northampton County, Eley graduated from Willis Hare High School in 1968, where he excelled in baseball and basketball. Despite missing what he considered a calling to go pro, he showcased remarkable talents, including his gift of ambidexterity—the ability to use both hands equally. Eley furthered his education at Wilson Tech, earning a welding certificate.
Eager for new experiences beyond country life, Eley relocated to New York, working for Panasonic, and later returned to North Carolina, joining Georgia Pacific of Conway. His skilled vocation led him to Newport News Naval Shipyard, where he dedicated 38 1/2 years before retiring in 2010. In 2002, guided by the Holy Spirit, Eley and Senthia established Northeastern Home Care, Inc., a testament to their entrepreneurial spirit.
Beyond his professional life, Eley found joy in mowing the lawn, passionately supported the Dallas Cowboys, and tried his hand at golf. He was known for his gift of encouragement, making a 2-minute trip to the post office, last 3-hours! He had a great love for driving around the "block" and engaging in uplifting conversation. Eley's tenacity and fatherly presence touched the lives of his nieces and nephews.
On Thursday, January 18th, 2024, at 6:15 p.m., surrounded by his loving family at home, God called Eley's name and whispered, "Peace Be Thine." In addition to his loving parents, Eley was predeceased by a brother, Jerry Ronald 'Mickey' Newsome; maternal grandparents, Alex & Willie Green Peebles; paternal grandparents, Charlie & Nettie Tyner Newsome; father-in-law, Oliver Bynum; sister-in-law, Eula Bynum Vaughan; brother-in-law, Oliver Lafayette Bynum and nephew-in-law, Erskine Reginald 'Reggie' Lawrence.
Eley is survived by: his beloved wife of 51 years, Senthia Claudine Bynum Newsome of the home; two daughters, Tonya Alston (Louis) of Knightdale, North Carolina and Deidre Baldwin (Calvin) of Conway, North Carolina; one son, Eley McCoy Newome, II of the home; three grandchildren, Calvin Baldwin III, Kaya Baldwin and Caleb Baldwin; one sister, Sandra Laurene Young (Watt) of Oxon Hill, Maryland; two brothers, James Newsome of Suffolk, Virginia and Ralph Gregory Newsome (Mayra) of Centerville, Virginia; mother-in-law, Gracie Daye Bynum of Pendleton, North Carolina; uncle, Jonathan Peebles (Christine) of Chillum, Maryland; aunt-in-law, Louise Taylor of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; uncles-in-law, Roy McCoy Daye of Pendleton, North Carolina and Alvin Daye of Virginia Beach, Virginia; sisters-in-law, Flora Bynum Newsome, Bertha Bynum Denson and Geraldine Bynum all of Pendleton, North Carolina, Mary Ann Bynum Granger (Matthew) of Conway, North Carolina and Ann Smith of District Heights, Maryland; a host of nieces, nephews relatives and friends.
