Deacon Jimmy Edwards Obituary

“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”

II Timothy 4:7

Jimmy Lee Edwards, son of the late Reverend Doctor Lawrence and Mable Kee Edwards, was born on Thursday, July 22nd, 1948, in the Wiccacanee Township of Northampton County, North Carolina. He was the sixth of ten children and was reared in a Christian home. At an early age, Jimmy accepted Christ as his Savior and joined Piney Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Jackson, North Carolina. On the calm afternoon of Thursday, January 23rd, 2025, surrounded by his loving family, Jimmy transitioned from the earthly realm into eternal rest.

Jimmy received his education within the Northampton County School System and graduated from Gumberry High School in 1968. On Saturday, July 5th, 1980, he married the love of his life, Annette Cumbo, and from their union, they were blessed with one son. Over the years, Jimmy worked for several employers, including Talon Zipper Factory, Almac, Lowes, Georgia Pacifc, and ultimately West Fraser in Seaboard, North Carolina, where he retired. Jimmy’s greatest joys were spending quality time with his family, landscaping, working in his yard, playing horseshoes, shooting basketball in the backyard, and watching westerns. Above all, he loved going to church, especially singing, as he had a remarkable gift for vocal harmony.

On Saturday, June 1st, 1991, Jimmy became a member of the Jackson Square Lodge #700, where he served as Junior Warden and Senior Deacon. One of his greatest honors was being ordained as a Deacon at Piney Grove Missionary Baptist Church on Sunday, March 18th, 2001, under the leadership of Reverend Timothy Edwards. At church, Jimmy dedicated himself to numerous ministries, including the Deacon’s Ministry, cemetery committee, finance committee, Usher’s Ministry, Gospel and Senior Choirs, and the Male Chorus. Additionally, he served as the church custodian for over 25 years, cleaning and maintaining the sanctuary with care and devotion. Jimmy remained a faithful and dedicated member of Piney Grove until God called him home.

Jimmy will be remembered for his infectious laughter, ever-present smile, and his unwavering love for people, his family, and most importantly, God. He touched the lives of many and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Jimmy’s legacy, love, strength, and memories will forever be cherished by his devoted wife, Annette C. Edwards of the home; his son, Erik L. Edwards (Nikki) and granddaughter, Karmen, all of Summerville, South Carolina; five brothers, Clifton K. Edwards of Newark, New Jersey, Reverend Timothy Edwards (Sylvia) of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, Herbert L. Edwards (Everleen) of Seaboard, North Carolina, Minister James T. Edwards (Carol) of Greensboro, North Carolina and William L. Parker (Kim) of Chesterfield, Virginia; two sisters, Dorothy Schlemm (Thomas) of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Joyce P. Edwards (Tyrone) of Greensboro, North Carolina; one sister-in-law, Frances Deloatch (Ronald); two brothers-in-law, Jeffrey Cumbo (Joyce) and Karl Cumbo, all of Conway, North Carolina; a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, church family and many friends.

In addition to his loving parents, Jimmy was preceded in death by two brothers, William L. Edwards and John A. Edwards, and sisters-in-law, Shawana Cumbo and Natalie Cumbo.

Jimmy touched everyone he met, and his kindness, love, and resilience will live on in the hearts of those who were blessed to know him.
