Deacon Matthew Harding 'Butch' Melvin

We thought of you with love today—and that is nothing new. We thought

of you yesterday and in the days before that as well. We think of you

in silence and often speak your name. Now, all we have are memories

and pictures, but your memory is our keepsake, one we will never

part with. God has you in His keeping; we hold you in our hearts.

Matthew Harding “Butch” Melvin, son of the late Wilbert Melvin Sr. and Martha Odessa Williams Melvin, was born on Tuesday, November 28th, 1950, in Northampton County, North Carolina.

Matthew, affectionately known as “Butch,” was educated in the public schools of Northampton County and graduated from Gumberry High School in 1969. At an early age, he joined Parkers Chapel Baptist Church and later became a devoted member of Piney Grove Baptist Church, where he remained faithful until his passing. During his years of service, he served in many capacities, including as an usher, van driver, and a member of the Male Chorus. In July 2008, he was ordained as a deacon.

Following his high school graduation, Matthew relocated to Mattapan, Massachusetts, where he lived for several years. Though small in stature, he made a strong impression and worked diligently during his time there, including employment with Unitrade in Watertown, Massachusetts. He later spent a brief period in California before returning home to North Carolina.

Upon returning, Matthew was employed for several years with Moore’s Lumber Company and later with West Fraser Timber Company, from which he retired. In addition to his full-time work, he also held part-time positions with Sir Walter Restaurant in Jackson, North Carolina; BP Service Station in Weldon, North Carolina; and Rich Square Market in Rich Square, North Carolina.

Matthew found great joy in fishing and generously shared his catch with others. He also loved traveling and was always willing to provide transportation to those in need. He cherished his family deeply, making every effort to visit loved ones near and far and rarely missing a family gathering. His presence was a constant source of love and joy, both in his church and throughout the community.

After a brief illness, Matthew departed this life on Wednesday, April 15th, 2026, and was called home to be with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Shirley Melvin; his brother, Nelson Melvin; his nephew, Anthony Buffaloe; his niece, Joyce Buffaloe Mills; his nephew, Gregory Melvin; his niece, Monica Boyd; and a host of aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Matthew leaves to cherish his loving memory his siblings: Wilbert Melvin Jr. and Eugene Melvin, both of Jackson, North Carolina; Alice Hinton of Raleigh, North Carolina; and Elaine Gibson (Gregory) of Portsmouth, Virginia.

He is also survived by his uncle, Donnell Williams of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina; a special friend, Waltine Moore; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him.
