Therefore shall ye keep my commandments, and do them: I am the LORD.
~Leviticus 22:31
Roosevelt Knight Jr, son of the late Roosevelt Knight Sr. and Edith Knight, was born December 14, 1933 in Millen, Georgia. He was educated in the Jenkins County Public School System.
As a young adult, Roosevelt migrated north to Newark, New Jersey. He became employed by Topper Toys, where he met his life partner, Mae Jordan, whom he later married. Several years later, Roosevelt secured employment at Ritter Foods in Elizabeth, New Jersey, which later became Sysco Foods. He retired from Sysco after completing many years of service.
Roosevelt had many passions and interests. In the early 70’s he ventured into the world of real estate ownership. He and his wife, Mae, purchased and renovated three properties. Two would be used as rental properties, and the third as a family home. Roosevelt served as a Deacon at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Newark, New Jersey, for several decades. After relocating to Weldon, North Carolina, in 1998, he continued his commitment of service and became an active member of the Deacons Ministry of St. Peters Missionary Baptist Church. He was known for leading devotional services and could always be counted on to share a spirit stirring song and prayer. He took pleasure in the care and maintenance of his home. You could often find him sitting on the front porch enjoying his retirement.
On Thursday, June 29, 2023, the Angel of Peace visited Roosevelt and whispered, “Peace Be Thine.” Roosevelt accepted the call and entered eternal rest.
Cherished memories will forever remain in the hearts of those that he touched. He leaves behind: one son, George Knight; four daughters, Laureatha Knight, Vernice Knight, Martha Knight and Joy Burnett; children-at-heart, Shirley Turner, Maso Cotton and Mabry Cotton; grandchildren, Antonio, Harrun, Termaine, Patrick, Curtis, Michael, Anthony, Jewel, Jade, Hanan, Elizabeth, Angel, Basira, Nicole, Sasha, Rhashawn, Jaquan, Janay, Maya, Ania, Ni-ray. His legacy can be seen in his grandchildren, which he reared just as his own, Takeera, Khia, Tarrell, Eric and Kenyan. He showed them all unconditional love.
Roosevelt had a special relationship with Takeera. As his granddaughter and caregiver, she wants to share the following thoughts, “Roosevelt Knight instilled nothing but good things in me and my children. He was my Dad. It was an honor to be his caregiver after the death of my grandmother. In his last days he brought me nothing but joy. He fought a good fight, he was the strongest person I’ve ever known. Even on his sick bed, he made sure I was okay. Before going to sleep each night he would wait for me to come home from work just so I could see his smile. On some of his most challenging days he would ask how I was doing. The love, inspiration, guidance and support he gave our family can never be replaced. Now it’s time for you to rest!”
In addition to his parents, Roosevelt was preceded in death by: his lovely wife, Mae Queen Knight; three grandchildren, Roosevelt Knight III, Curtis Knight and Eric Knight; son-at-heart, Wayne Cotton and nine siblings, Bertha Kelsey, Neese Kelsey, Hattie Griffin, Varnis Knight, Mildred Simpkins, Albert Knight, Ernest Knight, Christine Olgesby and Katherine Berian.
