Deaconess Doris Everson Obituary

“All my life YOU have been faithful. All my life YOU have been so, so good.

With every breath that I am able, I will sing of the goodness of God.”

Deaconess Doris Harris Everson was born on Tuesday, February 9th, 1937, in Northampton County, North Carolina, to the late Bonnie Harris and Fannie Odom Harris. She departed this life on Friday, June 5th, 2026, at Durham Regional Hospital. Doris was one of eight children born to Bonnie and Fannie Odom Harris. She accepted Christ at an early age and remained a faithful and active member of Branches Chapel Church in Rich Square, North Carolina, until her health began to decline. She was an ordained Deaconess and devout Missionary.  Deaconess Everson held this ordination in very high regard, as she was well respected for her guidance and wisdom.

Doris was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jesse Everson. She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Doris Everson Coleman (Glenn) of Youngsville, North Carolina, and her son, Jack Everson (Renee) of Portsmouth, Virginia. She also leaves behind four grandchildren: Jason Everson (Wendi) of Pittsboro, North Carolina; Emerald Everson of Portsmouth, Virginia; Dazyha Everson of Portsmouth, Virginia; and Rashaun Carter of Portsmouth, Virginia. In addition, she was blessed with five great-grandchildren: Ka’lani Carter, Ryligh Carter, Wesley Graves, Jada Everson, and Jenesis “Jenny” Everson.

Doris is also survived by her sister, Betty Johnson (P.D.) of Temple Hills, Maryland; her brother, Lloyd Harris of Hampton, Virginia; her sister-in-law, Mary Harris (Robert “Ray”) of Upper Marlboro, Maryland; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

For many years, Doris enjoyed working in her yard and tending to her garden, especially growing fruit trees in her backyard. One of her favorite pastimes was fishing, whether finding a quiet local spot or spending time fishing from the piers in Virginia. She especially treasured those moments shared with three of her closest friends, Mrs. Dora Mae Arrington, Mrs. Louise Williams, and Ms. Cheek.

Doris will be remembered for her unwavering faith, deep love for her family, gentle spirit, and the kindness she extended to everyone she encountered. Her legacy of love, strength, and devotion will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
