Deaconess Evelyn Peebles Obituary

Evelyn Marie Moody Peebles, age 78, of Garysburg, North Carolina, peacefully entered eternal rest on Saturday, April 4th, 2026, at her home, surrounded by the love and presence of her devoted family.

Born on Saturday, February 28th, 1948, in Pleasant Hill, North Carolina, Evelyn was the beloved daughter of the late Henry Moody, Sr. and Betty Zoleatha Scott Moody. A proud alumna of Gumberry High School, she graduated with the Class of 1966. Following a year in New York, where she was employed by Bell Telephone Company, she pursued higher education at Fayetteville State University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Business along with a teaching certificate in 1972.

Evelyn dedicated 40 years of her life to education within the Halifax County Public School system. She primarily served as a Business and Career Management teacher at Southeast Halifax High School in Enfield, where she also advised the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and contributed her leadership to both junior prom and senior graduation committees. Through her kindness, compassion, and steadfast commitment, she profoundly impacted the lives of countless students and colleagues.

At an early age, Evelyn was baptized and remained a faithful and active member of Faithful Band Missionary Baptist Church. She served diligently as a Deaconess for many years, leading and supporting numerous programs and ministries, including church bulletins, special events, and the beloved Rainbow Tea. Her unwavering faith guided her life, reflecting a legacy of love, grace, strength, and service to her community.

Evelyn’s commitment to community extended beyond the classroom and church. As an active member of the Gumberry High School Alumni Association, she organized several Ms. and Little Ms. Gumberry Alumni scholarship pageants and established the community’s first Mr. Debonair scholarship pageant for young men. As a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, she proudly sponsored debutantes for the Kappa Iota Omega Chapter’s scholarship balls. Known affectionately throughout the community as the “Tupperware lady,” Evelyn excelled as a high-level manager in Tupperware sales for many years. In her retirement, she continued her entrepreneurial spirit by selling Mary Kay products.

Evelyn leaves to cherish her precious memory her loving husband, Alexander Peebles; her three children, Antoin Peebles (Leonette Peebles), Alexia Peebles, and Tonya Herring (Mark Anthony Herring); her brother, Henry Moody, Jr. (Ernestine Moody); five grandchildren, Cornisha Tate (Robert Tate), Cotrayia Hardison, Marlon Bishop Herring, Mackenzie Herring, and Ayden Peebles; two great-grandchildren, Cayleigh and Camryn Tate; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Clifton Moody and Lawrence Moody.

Evelyn’s life was a beautiful testament to faith, family, education, and service. Her legacy will continue to live on in all who were blessed to know and love her.
