Deaconess Gracie Bynum Obituary

Deaconess Gracie Lucille Daye Bynum, age 99, was born on Friday, October 2nd, 1925, in Pendleton, North Carolina, to Lee Burden and Bertha Deloatch Daye. She peacefully answered the Master's call on Tuesday, January 28th, 2025, in the comfort of her home, surrounded by her loving family.

Gracie was the third of fifteen children and received her early education at Willis Hare School in Pendleton. From a young age, she worked on the family farm and cared for children. As a preacher’s daughter, she was deeply connected to her spiritual roots and joined Zoar Church in Pendleton early in life, where her faith flourished.

In her journey through life, Gracie met Oliver Bynum, the love of her life. They were united in marriage, and together they had seven children. As the eldest daughter, Gracie took on many responsibilities, using her nurturing spirit and strong work ethic to raise her children and foster their spiritual growth.

Gracie’s service to God extended beyond her family. She was actively involved in church activities, singing in the choirs of Zoar and First Baptist Church of Severn, teaching Sunday School, and serving as President of the Missionary Circle. She was also a past member of the Eastern Star. Gracie believed in expanding God’s work and dedicated time to visit nursing homes in Northampton County, where she sang with the “Union Band” and taught to uplift the spirits of the sick and shut-in.

Professionally, Gracie was employed by Severn Peanut Company, Rollic, Inc., Murfreesboro, and Mylcraft sewing factory for many years. A talented seamstress, she lovingly created clothing for her daughters, including wedding and debutante gowns, and often repaired and sewed garments for members of her community. She took great pride in maintaining a well-kept yard, sometimes even using a weed eater to tend to her front lawn. At the age of 74, she retired to care for her 95-year-old mother.

Gracie was preceded in death by her parents, Lee Burden and Bertha Deloatch Daye, her brothers Thomas, Lonnie, Mahlon, Bailon, Lee Burden Jr., Roy, and Alvin, her sisters Jeannette Dickerson, Mable, Misse Mae Brewer, and Bettie Lou Jordan, her children Eula Bynum Vaughan and Oliver “Lafayette” Bynum, and her grandson Erskine “Reggie” Lawrence. She was also preceded in death by her son-in-law, Eley Newsome Sr.

Left to cherish her precious memories are her daughters: Flora “Lucille” Newsome, Bertha “Christine” Denson, and Senthia “Claudine” Newsome, all of Pendleton, North Carolina; Geraldine Bynum, of the home; and Mary Ann Granger (Matthew) of Conway, North Carolina.

In addition to her daughters, Gracie’s love and care extended to her grandchildren: Brandy Bynum Dawson (Melvin), Raleigh, North Carolina; Andre Williams (Tamara), Hampton, Virginia; Kent Lawrence, Pendleton, North Carolina; as well as thirteen grandchildren: Tonya Alston (Louis), Knightdale, North Carolina; Keisha Bynum, Minneola, Florida; Veronica Moore, Baltimore, Maryland; Michelle Newsome Powell, Merrillville, Indiana; Corey Vaughan, Chesapeake, Virginia; Deidre Baldwin (Calvin), Conway, North Carolina; Eric Vaughan (Monica), Franklin, Virginia; Sonia Newsome, Galveston, Texas; Eley Newsome Jr., Pendleton, North Carolina; Oliver “Jr” Bynum III, New York, New York; and daughter-in-law Eliza Taylor Bynum, New York, New York. She is also survived by twenty great-grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Gracie’s legacy of love, faith, and service will continue to inspire all who knew her.
