     With hearts full of love and cherished memories, we celebrate the beautiful life and enduring legacy of Deaconess Vivian Marie Barnes, a beloved wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and treasured friend, who peacefully answered the Master’s call on Sunday, June 7th, 2026, at the age of 74.

Born on Monday, June 11th, 1951, in Northampton County, North Carolina, Vivian was the precious daughter of the late William Rogers and Ida Vivian “Bill” Rogers. From the very beginning, she embodied grace, kindness, and unwavering devotion to those she loved.

Vivian received her early education through the Northampton County Public School System and later continued her studies at Halifax Community College, where she gained valuable knowledge and experiences that would help shape a life deeply rooted in faith, family, and faithful service to others.

On Sunday, August 4th, 1974, Vivian united in holy matrimony with the love of her life, John Edward Barnes. For more than five decades, they shared a beautiful bond built upon love, loyalty, and companionship. Vivian was a devoted and faithful wife who found great joy in being by her husband’s side. Wherever John traveled, Vivian was often faithfully beside him, journeying together through life hand in hand. Their union reflected the words of Ecclesiastes 4:9, “Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour.”

At an early age, Vivian confessed to Christ and was baptized at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, where she became an active and dedicated servant of God. Her love for ministry was evident through her years of faithful service as a Deaconess, Church Financial Secretary, and Sunday School Secretary. She also served diligently as Financial Secretary for the Northampton County Sunday School Association, demonstrating her steadfast commitment to both her church family and community. Vivian truly lived according to the words of Joshua 24:15, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

A woman of exceptional dedication and a tireless work ethic, Vivian devoted 45 years of faithful service to the Northampton County Department of Social Services, retiring as a Clerical IV. Her warm smile, caring spirit, and willingness to lend a helping hand made her beloved by countless individuals. Vivian seemed to know nearly everyone who walked through the doors of Social Services, and if you did not know her upon arrival, you certainly knew her before you left. Her kindness left a lasting imprint on all who encountered her.

Even after retirement, Vivian’s servant’s heart never ceased. She continued caring for others as Property Manager of Cedar Grove Apartments in Seaboard, North Carolina, where she worked diligently to ensure the needs of residents were met. Her genuine concern for others reflected the spirit of Galatians 6:9, “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”

Vivian found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She loved talking on the telephone, spending hours searching for treasures and bargains at Goodwill, and attending the famous 301 Endless Yard Sale, spanning more than one hundred miles. She enjoyed watching her favorite soap operas, the Game Show Network, and American Idol. Her love for fellowship also led her to visit neighboring churches and attend gospel concerts throughout the surrounding communities.

Vivian was preceded in death by her beloved parents, William Rogers and Ida Vivian “Bill” Rogers; her loving aunt, Dorothy Rogers, who lovingly raised her and played a significant role in her life; her sisters, Ida Jean Daye and Sallie Ruth Rogers; and her brothers, William Rogers Jr. (Sam), Michael Rogers, Dennis Rogers, Bruce Rogers, and Jimmy Rogers.

Though our hearts are saddened by her departure, we rejoice in knowing that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. 2 Corinthians 5:8 reminds us that “to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.”

Vivian leaves to cherish her loving memory her devoted husband of 51 years, John Edward Barnes; her loving daughter, Tynoshia “Nene” Richardson, and devoted son-in-law, Neal Richardson, of Chester, Virginia; her beloved granddaughter, Ashley Richardson, of Chester, Virginia; her sisters, Alice Flythe (William) of McLeansville, North Carolina, Debbie “Carolyn” Rogers of Greensboro, North Carolina, Mary Adams (Tyron) of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Sylvia Perez of Virginia Beach, Virginia; her brothers, Melvin Rogers Sr. (Sallie) of Margarettsville, North Carolina, Alvin Rogers of Norfolk, Virginia, Douglas Rogers (Denise) of Greensboro, North Carolina, and Preston Rogers of Jackson, North Carolina; her sisters-in-law, Mamie Banks of Jackson, North Carolina, and Carrie B. Barnes of Seaboard, North Carolina; her brothers-in-law, William “Jabo” Barnes Jr. of Norfolk, Virginia, Jessie Barnes (Elsie) of Seaboard, North Carolina, Sam Barnes (Rethella) of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, Perry Barnes of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, Jerry Barnes of Pleasant Hill, North Carolina, and Terry Barnes of Tacoma, Washington; her beloved aunts, Lessie Mae Harris of Franklin, Virginia, and Ernestine Stephenson of Murfreesboro, North Carolina; along with a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever treasure the love, laughter, and precious memories she leaves behind.

Though Vivian’s earthly journey has ended, her legacy of love, faith, kindness, and unwavering devotion will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. Well done, thy good and faithful servant.
