Delores Hawkins Obituary

The Journey...

“Upon life’s journey, we are given opportunities to plant seeds of goodness, seeds of kindness, and seeds of blessings that bestow our hearts, our work, and our being. For those that sow the fields with loving generosity, so shall they reap the abundant harvest of eternal life.”

Today, we pause to pay tribute to the memory of Delores Tanksley Hawkins, who was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. She was one who loved her family with all her heart, and not only nurtured her family, but enriched the lives of many. Delores began her earthly pilgrimage on Monday, August 23, 1948, in Brooklyn, New York. She was born to the parentage of the late Master and Lillie Mae Richardson Scott. Upon relocating to North Carolina, she received her formal education and graduated from Inborden High School in Enfield. As life progressed, she met and married the love of her life, Junius Roosevelt Hawkins.

“Who can find a virtuous woman? She is worth far more than rubies.” (Proverbs 31:10) Delores’ qualities of hard work, fear of God, respect she had for her husband, foresight, encouragement, care for others, concern for the poor and love for her family, all led her to a life of enjoyment, honor and worth.

Yes, Delores was the epitome of “A Virtuous Woman” and respected as such. The values and principles she instilled will leave a permanent impression in the hearts of all she touched. Delores’ love for family empowered her to leave them with these parting words: “No time to cry, Don’t shed a tear, I am with God, In spirit I am here. I kept the faith, My spirit is light, I am at peace now, I fought the good fight."

When peace like a river, attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll, Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say, It is well, it is well with my soul.” Delores Tanksley Hawkins, transitioned from this earthly life to eternal rest Tuesday, July 7, 2020; while in the care of Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, North Carolina.

Though the clouds may hang over, there will be a brighter day. In that land, they call heaven, God shall wipe all tears away. We, who are bound by treasured ties of love and affection as we pass her to God’s keeping: her husband, Junius Roosevelt Hawkins, of the home; eleven children, Luther Taylor (Taneisha Manley) of Enfield, North Carolina, Marcus Taylor and Javis Taylor (Jennifer) both of Newport News, Virginia, Tranesha Taylor of Seaboard, North Carolina, Tonio Hawkins of Maryland, Laurice Hawkins (Michelle) of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, Ron Hawkins of Boykins, Virginia, Felicia Hawkins of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, Carrie Hawkins (Anthony) of Pennsylvania, Brittney Hawkins (Damien) of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina and Quinton Hawkins (Jasmine) of New York; thirty-eight grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; two sisters, Clementine Scott (Andrew) of Franklin, Virginia and Sally Scott of Enfield, North Carolina; a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
