Today, we pause to pay tribute to the memory of Derek Antione Scott, who was a loving son, brother, nephew, cousin and friend.
On Tuesday, September 21, 1982, life was bestowed upon Derek Antione Scott, a precious life entrusted to the capable hands and care of Juanita Scott and Willis S. Green at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville, North Carolina.
Derek soon grew and developed into a compassionate young man, who met no stranger. Everyone knew Derek by his gentle spirit and infectious smile, that could so easily brighten anyone’s day. Derek was fascinated by anything related to emergency vehicles, including law enforcement, firefighters and EMS. His passion was listening to his radio scanner. In doing so, he would envision himself riding along in the patrol cars or fire trucks on calls. It was mesmerizing, entertaining, informative and educational, all at the same time. He would often clap his wrist together and say, “Po Po lock them up!”, acknowledging that he knew one must take responsibility and accept the consequences of their actions.
Derek joined Faith and Forgiveness Holy Church, under the leadership of his uncle, Pastor Ronnie Perry. It was there his love for God was strengthened and spiritual gifts were nurtured. He enjoyed attending church. He was a faithful servant and always obedient to the scripture, Malachi 3:10, “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.” He always had his tithes in his hand and gave it willingly, not grudgingly.
Derek was educated in the Northampton County Public School System. He thrived in the classroom with his peers and formed many friendships, with his outgoing personality. He was a true joy to be around and a ray of sunshine. Derek was very kind to others, and passed his joy on to his classmates and teacher.
It’s sometimes hard to understand why certain things have to be. Our sad hearts seek the answer, but according to Romans 8:28, we know that all things work together for the good of them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose. On Friday, December 31, 2021; while in the serenity of his home, Derek crossed the great divide, exchanging life for eternal rest.
Though the clouds may hang over, there will be a brighter day. In that land they call heaven, God shall wipe all tears away. Derek’s sweet spirit and caring heart will long be remembered by all those whose lives he touched. We who are bound by treasured ties of affection and love, as we pass him to God’s keeping are: his loving parents, Juanita Scott of Garysburg, North Carolina and Willis Green of Petersburg, Virginia; his siblings, Willis Green and Damien Scott of Garysburg, North Carolina, Teresa Sharp (Terrell) of Durham, North Carolina and Kimberly Robinson of Burlington, North Carolina; aunts, Narcissa B.
