Doris Phillips Coates, affectionately known as 'Bit' or 'Big Girl,' graced this earth with her beautiful presence on August 24th, 1953, in Rich Square, North Carolina. Born to the late David Lee Phillips, Sr., and Bernice Gatling Phillips, she left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew her.
Educated in the Northampton County Public School System, Doris graduated from W. S. Creecy School in Rich Square, North Carolina. Throughout her life, she earned the love and respect of many in the Northampton County area, remaining committed to generously supporting her family even after leaving her roots in Rich Square.
A faithful and supportive member of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in Seaboard, North Carolina, Doris served in various capacities, including as an ordained Deaconess, Church Clerk, dedicated Usher, and chairperson of the Culinary Arts Committee.
Beyond her career, church commitments and community involvement, Doris indulged in several beloved hobbies, such as traveling, shopping, savoring good food, and helping others. Her life was a testament to selfless service, and those who had the pleasure of meeting her were captivated by her infectious smile and warm personality. Doris will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
On Thursday, January 11th, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer, Doris answered God's call to eternal rest in the serenity of her home. Throughout her illness, Doris remained steadfast and unwavering in her faith in God. In addition to her beloved parents, she was preceded in death by her only son, Joseph Collis 'Brody' Phillips.
Her life, marked by loving deeds and perpetual thoughtfulness for others' special needs, will be forever cherished. Her sweet spirit, caring heart, and enduring generosity will be fondly remembered by all whose lives she touched. As we grapple with the bitter pain of her passing, we find solace in the promise made by God to wipe away all tears from our eyes.
Doris is survived by: her husband, James 'JT' Coates of the home; two granddaughters, Jocelyn and Jada Phillips; one great-grandson, Josiah Phillips; her sisters, Beatrice Greatheart, Alease Wilkins and Gladys Askew, all of Rich Square, North Carolina, Darlis Phillips of Jackson, North Carolina and Brenda Phillips of Rich Square, North Carolina; her brothers, David Phillips Jr. and Charles Phillips also of Rich Square, North Carolina; along with a host of sisters & brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
In honoring her life, we reflect on the love and generosity she shared, and may the warmth of her spirit continue to touch the lives of those who were fortunate to know her.
