Dorothy (Mills) Carter

With humble submission to the will of God, we honor the life and legacy of Dorothy Mills Carter—a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend.

Dorothy was born on Sunday, April 20th, 1930, in Halifax County, North Carolina, to the late Willie and Eliza Brown Mills. She attended Gold Mine School and, early in life, accepted Christ, becoming a devoted member of Mount Olive Baptist Church in Littleton, North Carolina. As life progressed, Dorothy met and ultimately married Sandy Alexander Carter, Sr., the love of her life, with whom she built a family and shared many cherished memories. To help support her family, Dorothy worked at Halifax Linen Service in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, and later at McIver School in Littleton as a cafeteria worker, where she served until her retirement.

On Tuesday, November 12th, 2024, while in the compassionate care of ECU North Hospital in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, Dorothy answered God’s call to eternal rest. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Sandy Sr., who passed in 1996; two sons, Willie and Sandy Jr.; and her brother, Alfred Mills.

Dorothy was known for her acts of love, thoughtfulness, and a life devoted to the needs of others. Her sweet spirit, caring heart, and generosity will forever be remembered by those who knew her. She leaves behind cherished memories with her children: Pearl Carter, Brenda Cromwell (Butch), Patricia Eaton, Camilla Williams (Lester), Connie Handsome (Earl), Lucy Silver, Maurice, Calvin (Vera), Solomon (Carolyn), and Alfred (Marlene) Carter; her children-at-heart, Queen Robinson and John Taylor; her sister, Shelia Carpenter; three generations of grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

Dorothy’s love and warmth will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to know her.
