THE LIFE & LEGACY OF Dorothy Cobb Dunning

For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course,

I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge,

shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.

     Dorothy Cobb Dunning, daughter of the late Charlie T. Cobb and Della Cullipher Cobb was born on Wednesday, May 19, 1937 in Bertie County, North Carolina.

     Dorothy was educated in the Hertford County School System; graduating from Ahoskie High School. For many years, she was employed with Perdue Farm of Lewiston-Woodville, where she retired.

     Dorothy united in fellowship with Carpenter’s Shop Church of Ahoskie, North Carolina, where she was a faithful member, until her health failed. She loved the Lord, attending church and her church family. Spending quality time with her family brought Dorothy great joy. At any given time, she could be found working in her beautiful flower and vegetable gardens, while songs of “The Old Rugged Cross” were playing from the porch. In addition, she enjoyed cooking and reading her bible.

     Dorothy was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Edgar Carroll Dunning. This union was blessed with two beautiful daughters. She was a devoted wife, who worked alongside her husband to care for and provide for their family.

     On Friday, January 28, 2022, while in the care of Rich Square Healthcare Center, Rich Square, North Carolina; God lifted our dear loved one from this world of sin, sorrow and pain, to a place of peace and sweet eternal rest. Her seeds are well-sown; her service on earth is complete, and she now experiences the victory and triumph of eternal life. In addition to her parents and husband, Edgar, she was preceded in death by her grandson, Brian Harmon and two sisters, Annie Gray Jenkins and Della Swain.

     Sleep on, beloved, sleep, and take thy rest; Lay down thy head upon the Saviour’s Breast; We love thee well, but Jesus loves thee best. Her sweet spirit, caring heart and generosity will long be remembered by all those whose lives she touched. We who remain, struck by the bitter pain of death, but satisfied with the promise made by God, that He would wipe all tears from our eyes: two daughters, Becky (Waverly) Joyner and Darlene Dunning; one brother, Charlie (Sadie) Cobb all of Ahoskie, North Carolina; six grandchildren, Raymond Dunning of Greenville, North Carolina, William Harmon, III of Ahoskie, North Carolina, Bobby (Sherwanda) Dunning of Powellsville, North Carolina, Timothy Smith of Greenville, North Carolina, Christopher Dunning of Murfreesboro, North Carolina and LaDonya Boone of Ahoskie, North Carolina; nine great-grandchildren, Da’Nya Harmon, Ny’Asia Dunning, William Harmon, IV, Jamari Dunning, Da’Ziah Harmon, Brian Boone, Zy’Bria Boone, Honesty Harmon and Printess Boone; sister-in-law, Ina Dunning of Windsor, North Carolina; a host of niece, nephews, relatives and friends.
