Etta Joyner Obituary

For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy

to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

~Romans 8:18

Etta Earl Joyner peacefully transitioned on Tuesday, January 6th, 2026, at her home in Atlanta, Georgia. Today, we celebrate and honor a life marked by faith, dedication, and love—as a devoted daughter, sister, aunt, partner, and friend.

Born on Monday, August 28th, 1950, in Conway, North Carolina, Etta was the beloved daughter of the late Earl Joyner and Gladys Flythe Joyner and the third of six children. From an early age, she nurtured a strong relationship with God, joining Zoar Missionary Baptist Church in Pendleton, North Carolina, where her faith took root and flourished.

Etta received her early education in the Northampton County Public Schools and was a proud graduate of Willis Hare School in Pendleton, North Carolina. She continued her academic journey at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro, North Carolina, where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting. While at NCA&TSU, she became a member of the Alpha Mu Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, in 1970—an affiliation she cherished throughout her life.

Following graduation, Etta relocated to Washington, D.C., to pursue a career in accounting. She began her professional career at Communications Satellite Corporation (COMSAT) and, during her time in the nation’s capital, became an active member of Trinity African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church.

In the mid-1980s, Etta made Atlanta, Georgia, her home. There, she applied her accounting expertise across several companies and state agencies within the metropolitan Atlanta area, including the Medical Association of Georgia and the Department of Defense. Her spiritual journey continued at Hillside International Truth Center under the leadership of Bishop Dr. Barbara L. King, where she remained a devoted and faithful member until her passing.

Etta found joy in traveling—by plane, bus, or automobile—attending concerts, and spending cherished time with family. Among her many travels, a particularly memorable experience was her trip to Egypt, the cradle of civilization. Family meant everything to Etta; she took great pride in being a loving daughter, a loyal sister, and a constant source of support and encouragement to her nieces and nephews. After retiring from state government service, she remained active by walking with fellow seniors at local shopping malls and enjoying quiet moments at the library.

Etta was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Gladys Flythe Joyner; her sister, Hellen Devolia Joyner Vinson; and her brothers, Randolph Scott Joyner and Kenneth Gregory Joyner.

She leaves to cherish her life and legacy two sisters, Gloria Joyner Johnson of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Cecilia Joyner Jasper of Lake Jackson, Texas; a sister-in-law, Shelia Keith Joyner of Schertz, Texas; three nephews, Darryll (Argie) Joyner, Kendall Joyner, and Bradley Vinson of Washington, D.C.; four nieces, Natonya (Darren) Ingram of Rockwall, Texas, Ayanna Franklin of Rosharon, Texas, Katrina Joyner of Columbia, Maryland, and Opal Joyner of Richmond, Virginia; a longtime companion, James Hill of Atlanta, Georgia; one great-niece; seven great-nephews; and a host of cousins, friends, and loved ones who will forever hold her memory close.
