Evelyn Cherry Obituary

"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."

— Matthew 11:28

Evelyn Whitaker Cherry, beloved daughter of the late Al Whitaker, Jr. and Lola Edwards Whitaker Baugham, was born on Wednesday, September 23rd, 1964, in Northampton County, North Carolina.

Evelyn was educated in the Northampton County School System and proudly graduated with the Class of 1982 from Northampton County High School - East. A determined and lifelong learner, she later pursued higher education and, in 2002, earned an Associate Degree in Information Systems from Roanoke-Chowan Community College.

Throughout her life, Evelyn held a variety of professional roles, including positions with REA and CPTA. She also served as an assistant store manager at Family Dollar, where her dedication and work ethic were well-respected.

On Wednesday, August 27th, 2025, while in the care of ECU Medical Center in Greenville, North Carolina, our dearly loved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend peacefully transitioned from this life.

In addition to her parents, Evelyn was preceded in death by her sister, Barbara Jean Whitaker.

She leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and cherished memories in the hearts of her two devoted daughters: Makita Winston of Ahoskie, North Carolina, and Queshia Cherry of Rich Square, North Carolina; her three adored grandchildren: Emonjaleya, Amazeyana, and Amontraz.

Evelyn is also lovingly remembered by her two sisters, Lola Burroughs (Steven) of Marietta, Georgia, and Elsie Jacobs of Woodland, North Carolina; her niece, Tasha Jacobs of Potecasi, North Carolina; and her nephews, Junior Jacobs of Rocky Mount, North Carolina and Alden Burroughs of Marietta, Georgia. A host of aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family members, and friends also mourn her passing and celebrate her life.

Evelyn will be remembered for her resilience, kindness, and unwavering love for her family. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.
