GARY LINWOOD SCOTT, SR., age 63, passed away on February 10th, 2025, in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. He was born on April 2nd, 1961, in New York City, New York.
Gary’s passion for creativity and design led him to pursue his education at the High School of Fashion Industries, New York City Community College, and the Fashion Institute of Technology. His lifelong dedication to fashion and design was evident through his career, particularly as an educator. For many years, he worked with marginalized and underserved populations, including disabled adults and incarcerated youth, sharing his love of fashion and design with his students. Gary taught at several New York City Board of Education high schools and guided student designers participating in the annual city-wide fashion show.
Outside of his work, Gary was a man of many interests. He enjoyed golfing, dancing, and playing the guitar—skills he taught himself. A lifelong learner, Gary was also an avid reader who gravitated toward works that revealed hidden truths and enjoyed military fiction in his free time. His outgoing personality and sense of humor left lasting impressions on everyone he met.
Faith was an important part of Gary’s life. Initially baptized in the Baptist faith, he spent most of his adult years attending Catholic services, completing all eligible sacraments. Gary was a registered parishioner at St. Fortunata’s Parish in Brooklyn, New York, and later at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. His commitment to his faith was further reflected in his induction into the Knights of Columbus, though he had not been active at the time of his passing.
Gary is survived by his brothers Jerry Scott, Michael Scott, Christopher Scott, and Therry Kirsten Scott, as well as his sister Lynn Scott. He leaves behind his children, GH Scott, Korey Scott, Zachary Scott, and Gabrielle Scott, and his former wife, Maria Scott. Gary was blessed with the love of his grandchildren: Jadon, Brooklyn, Laylanie, Lily, Ariana, King, and Cameron. He is also survived by his nieces Yessenia Scott, Cierra Scott, Melissa Scott, Clarissa Scott, and Tiffany Cates; his nephew Timothy Scott; daughter-in-law Lourdes Moreno-Scott; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, family, and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, Mary Ester (Edmonds) Scott and Therry Scott, Jr.; his brother Daryl; and his sister Cheryl.
Though Gary faced significant challenges over the past two decades that made it difficult to maintain close relationships, he continued to give and receive love from his family and friends. His memory will remain with all who knew him. May he rest in peace.
