“To everything there is a season, and to every purpose under
the Heaven: A time to be born and a time to die. A time to
plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted.”
— ECCLESIASTES 3:1-2
Geraldine Newsome, beloved daughter of the late MacCallie Newsome and Emma Lee Johnson Newsome, began her earthly journey on Tuesday, December 9th, 1947, in Northampton County, North Carolina.
Affectionately known as “Ger,” she lived a life deeply rooted in love, strength, and quiet service to others. In her early years, she faithfully assisted her parents in caring for their home and nurturing her younger siblings, embracing responsibility with a grace far beyond her years. This spirit of care and devotion remained a defining part of her life.
Ger was known for her open heart and welcoming home. She extended shelter, comfort, and unconditional love to many, never treating anyone as a guest, but always as family. Truly, she possessed a heart of gold. Regardless of life’s challenges, she never allowed adversity to alter her gentle spirit. She remained steadfast, kind, and genuine—a constant source of love and stability, and an irreplaceable pillar within her family.
She found joy in life’s simple yet meaningful pleasures. Ger cherished car rides filled with laughter alongside her “Wiggle Wanda” and her beloved baby sister, Galsey—moments that created lasting memories. She had a deep love for gardening, nurturing life with her hands just as she nurtured those around her. Her creativity shone through her sewing, as she lovingly crafted quilts and pillowcases that brought warmth and comfort to others. In the kitchen, she expressed her love through cooking and was especially celebrated for her delicious, unforgettable biscuits. During quiet moments, she found peace and relaxation working through puzzle books.
Geraldine’s legacy is one of enduring love, resilience, and unwavering kindness. Her warmth, generosity, and gentle spirit have left an indelible mark on all who knew and loved her.
Life is but a stopping place, A pause in what’s to be, A resting place along the road, To sweet eternity. And when the journey finally ends, We’ll claim a great reward, And find an everlasting peace, Together with the Lord. On Thursday, April 9th, 2026, in the serenity of her home and surrounded by her loving and devoted family, Geraldine peacefully transitioned from this earthly life into eternal rest. She was a true warrior throughout her illness.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her two sisters, Margaret Purnell and Dorothy Edwards; her brother, Johnnie Mac Newsome; and her nephew, Derrick Newsome.
Though clouds may gather overhead, There will come a brighter day; In that land called Heaven, God shall wipe all tears away. Cherishing her memory and bound by ties of deep affection and love are her devoted children: James Williams (Tina) of Weldon, North Carolina; Wanda Williams (Tony) of Seaboard, North Carolina; and Melissa Williams (Robert) of Weldon, North Carolina. She also leaves to honor her legacy her grandchildren: Shakiyla Johnson; Karman Williams (Zhane Perry); James Williams, Jr.; Keonta Williams; Deondray Williams; Michael Robinson; Markin Robinson; and Markina Robinson; along with nineteen great-grandchildren.
She is further survived by her loving sisters: Evangelist Gladys Mallory of Statesville, North Carolina; Geneva Joyner of Jackson, North Carolina; and Rosa Newsome of Margarettsville, North Carolina; eight nieces, including her cherished niece Sherette, who never outgrew her lap and lovingly called her “Grandma”; four nephews; and a host of other dear relatives and friends.
Geraldine also shared a beautiful and devoted love with her partner, Otis R. Sheppard, for 24 wonderful years. She loved him deeply and stood faithfully by his side. Her nurturing spirit and unwavering commitment to their bond reflected the depth of love she carried within her heart.
