Gladys Flythe Obituary

It all began on Monday, June twenty-second, in the year of nineteen hundred and forty-two. It was hot in the town of Pendleton, North Carolina. Her grandfather, Harvey was working in the fields, as he was awaiting the arrival of his first grandchild. The midwife arrived to help her mother, Virginia deliver her first little angel into the world. Her grandmother, Sallie, was by Virginia’s side assisting, to make sure all went well.  Later on a beautiful baby girl entered into this world. It was agreed upon to name her, Gladys Louise Harris.

Growing up in a loving and nurturing home, Gladys attended Willis Hare School, graduating with the class of 1961. Having God as an integral part of her upbringing, she accepted Christ as her Lord and Savoir, early in life and joined the Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church of Margarettsville, North Carolina.

As life progressed, Gladys birthed in the world her first beautiful baby girl, Jacqueline. She then went on to Washington, DC, where she was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Ernest Flythe, Sr. This union was blessed with four beautiful children: Curtis, Brenda, Ernest Jr. and Kimberly. While living in ‘DC’, Gladys worked at the Pentagon, as a secretary. Later in life she moved to Norfolk, Virginia, where she was employed with the Norfolk Public Schools, as a Bus Driver. Upon relocating back to North Carolina, she worked for Interim Home Health Care.

Gladys was very talented and had an entrepreneurial spirit. She was a gifted seamstress, hair stylist and ear piercing artist. She was also an excellent cook. She felt she was the best cook on this side of the universe! Gladys could take two fish, five loaves, and feed a neighborhood. She was best known for her fried crabs and homemade rolls. Her favorite pastimes included playing bingo and scratch tickets.

Gladys loved her family with all of heart. Nothing brought her more joy than spending quality time with those she loved, especially her grandchildren. She was a mother figure to everyone. She was a listening ear, did not judge anyone and always gave good, sound advice.

In the year of twenty twenty-one, Gladys’ health began to fail. However she kept a positive attitude and thanked God for life being as well as it was. The Lord saw that Gladys was getting tired on this side. God promised He would never leave her and that if He left, He would go to prepare a place for her. And where He would be, she would be also. The Lord sent his angels to bring his beautiful child home on Wednesday, August 24, 2022, while in the comfort of her home, surrounded by loved ones.

Memories of her love and many sweet memories will forever live in the hearts of: five children, Rev. Jacqueline Harris Dickens (Rev. Dr. Carroll R. Dickens, Sr.) of Gaston, North Carolina, Curtis E. Flythe (Narda) of Norfolk, Virginia, Brenda Rogers of Margarettsville, North Carolina, Ernest L. Flythe of Seaboard, North Carolina and Kimberly F. Newsome (Taiwan) of Jackson, North Carolina; fourteen grandchildren, Latisha (Darnell), Tameria (Thomas), Romeo, Floyd, Alicia (Jason), Alberto Jr., Kameisha (Marcus), Carroll Jr., Curtis, Leonardo, Yamesha (Antonio), Lorenzo, Au’Dasia and Zaria; forty-one great-grandchildren; her siblings, Evelyn Blunt, Donald Morris (Linda), A. Faye Bolden (Colon) and Monica Morris all of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Raymond Morris of Norfolk, Virginia, Wilbert Morris (Ethel) of Elizabeth City, North Carolina, Sallie Rogers (Melvin) of Margarettsville, North Carolina and Anthony Morris (Sematar) of Upper Marlboro, Maryland; sister-in-law, Essie Revell of Hertford, North Carolina; her companion for 37 years, Willie C. Bottoms; a host of loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Gladys is now reunited with her parents, Wilbert and Virginia Dare Morris; her grandparents, Harvey and Sallie; siblings, Helen Rawles, Robert Morris and Roy Morris.
