Gracie Mae Gatling Futrell, beloved daughter of the late Joe Henry Gatling and Helen Jennings, began her journey through life on Sunday, April 7th, 1946, in Pendleton (Northampton County), North Carolina. She was educated in the Northampton County Public School System and graduated in 1964 from Willis Hare High School. Soon after, she found love and was united in Holy Matrimony to Thomas Dale Futrell.
At an early age, Gracie accepted Christ and was baptized at Macedonia African Methodist Episcopal Church in Severn, North Carolina. As her spiritual journey continued, she later joined in Christian fellowship with Miracle Tabernacle Church of Deliverance in Weldon, North Carolina. Gracie was deeply devoted to her family, known for her sharp wit, and admired for her straightforward nature. Over the years, she was employed at The Pub, John’s Seafood, Perdue, and Aunt Sarah’s House of Pancakes, and she also spent many years living in New Jersey.
On Thursday, April 2nd, 2026, Gracie quietly transitioned from this earthly life into the presence of the Lord. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe Henry Gatling and Helen Jennings; her husband, Thomas Dale Futrell; her sisters, Doretha, Syndonia, Helen Marie, and Audrey Mae; and her brother, Bernard.
She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Stefanie Regina Gatling of the home; her brother-in-law, Junius Barnes; her sister-in-law, Ella Mae Gatling; her goddaughter, Sandra Wilson; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and dear friends.
Gracie’s presence here on earth will be deeply missed. Her heart was a gift to all who knew her—gentle, generous, and overflowing with love. As long as there is memory, Gracie will live on. Those we love remain with us, for love itself lives on. Cherished memories never fade because a loved one is gone. Those we love can never be more than a thought apart, for as long as there is memory, Gracie will live on in our hearts.
