Gwendolyn Amanda (Hardy) Manning, the youngest daughter of the late Deacon Lonza C. Hardy, Sr. and the late Morlene (Harding) Hardy, was born on August 4, 1953, in Pleasant Hill, North Carolina in Northampton County. She transitioned peacefully at her home in Roanoke Rapids, N.C. on Sunday, November 26, 2023, following a brief illness.
Gwen was educated at Gumberry High School in Gumberry, NC and at Halifax Technical College in Weldon, NC. At an early age, she joined the Faithful Band Missionary Baptist Church in Pleasant Hill, NC, where she remained a member until her death.
Later in life, Gwen married the late Langford Manning, Sr. and their union was blessed with two children, Samantha Nicole Manning of Roanoke Rapids, NC and Langford Manning, Jr. of Cary, NC and two grandchildren, James Dominic McCain and Jordan Kah’lil McCain, both of Roanoke Rapids, NC.
Gwen utilized the associate degree in Licensed Practical Nursing that she earned at Halifax Tech to enjoy a long and successful 30-plus year career as an LPN at Guardian Care Nursing Home in Roanoke Rapids, which later became Signature Nursing Home. She retired in 2015. In her spare time, Gwen enjoyed watching television series, movies and soap operas, playing her favorite card game – Phase 10, writing poetry, cooking, washing and cleaning, and organizing things. Mostly, she enjoyed the camaraderie of relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents, Lonza Hardy, Sr. and Morlene Hardy, and her husband Langford Manning, Sr., Gwen was preceded in death by; her sister, Barbara Ann (Hardy) Porch, her paternal grandparents, James Solomon and Clara (Brooks) Hardy, her maternal grandparents, Robert and Rebecca Jane Harding.
Others left behind to cherish Gwen’s memories are: one sister, Gloria Jean Hardy of Bronx, NY; two brothers, Lonza Calvin Hardy, Jr. of Newport News, VA and James Hardy of Greenville, NC; two nieces, Barbara Jean Porch of Knightdale, NC and Monique Pollard of Winterville, NC; three nephews, Michael Anthony Porch of Knightdale, NC, Rashad Ibn Hardy of Bronx, NY and Jailen Dawson of Winterville, NC; one aunt, Ethel Darden of Bronx, NY; a sister-in-law, Lillie M. Moore of Charlotte, NC; a brotherin-law, Joseph (Eunice) Manning of Hampton, VA; a very special friend, Janet DiLauro of Weldon, NC; a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
Relatives and Friends are encouraged to visit Mrs. Manning's tribute wall to share memories, extend condolences and to order floral tributes, as sentiments to the family.
