Harold Louis Williams, son of the late Edwards Lewis Williams and Ruth Joyner Williams, was born on Tuesday, February 15, 1954 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Harold was educated in the Northampton County School System; graduating from Gumberry High School - Class of 1972. He matriculated at Elizabeth City State University and later completed his course studies at North Carolina A&T University, with a concentration in Industrial Arts. While there, he earned the nickname, ‘Sugar Bear’.
Being reared in a Christian home, Harold accepted Christ at an early age and united in Christian Fellowship with Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Margarettsville, North Carolina.
On Saturday, April 2, 1994, Harold was joined in Holy Matrimony with his sweetheart of 10 years, Phyllis Harding. They shared 38 years together. Harold was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He loved his family with all of his heart. Spending quality time with family and friends brought him great joy. He absolutely adored his precious grandchildren.
Harold was very passionate about grilling and entertaining guests in his NC-A&T man cave, especially on the 4th of July. He was known for his famous pork and turkey barbecue. In addition, he treasured his camera and enjoyed taking photos.
In earlier years, Harold was employed with North Carolina Dominion Power, as a lineman. He soon realized his passion was coaching. Coach Williams began his career at Gumberry High School, before moving to Northampton County High School-West. He later transferred to Northwest Halifax High School, where he served as Athletic Director; Drop-Out Prevention Coordinator; Football, Basketball and Track Coach; all before retiring in 2012. Coach Williams was known for his matching sweat suits, caps and sneakers. However, he could dress up in his suit and tie too!
