Helen Lassiter Obituary

“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”

II Timothy 4:7

Helen Elizabeth Ferguson Lassiter, beloved daughter of Willie and Dora Plummer Ferguson, was born on September 19, 1933, in Southampton County, Virginia. She received her education in the Southampton County School District and remained a resident of Boykins, Virginia, until she met the love of her life, Johnnie Lassiter, Jr.

In 1950, after their marriage, she relocated to North Carolina. Upon moving to Severn, North Carolina, Helen joined First Baptist Church, where she served faithfully over the years. She was an active member of the mass choir, co-chairperson of the Trustee Board, and a dedicated participant in Sunday School and Vacation Bible School.

Helen worked for a period at Severn Peanut Company and later at Rollic, Inc. (Murfreesboro Manufacturing), before retiring from the workforce. Even in retirement, she continued to serve as a caregiver for her family. Helen’s hobbies included sewing, quilting, fishing, gardening, and caring for her chickens. She also adored her beloved dog, Buddy. Known for her industrious nature, she often said, “I can’t sit and hold my hands and do nothing—I have to stay busy,” and “Let me do what I can.” She expressed her love for her children, grandchildren, and friends by making beautiful quilts to keep them warm.

On Tuesday, July 30th, 2024, while in the care of Gates House in Gatesville, North Carolina, God lifted Helen from this world of sorrow and pain to a place of peace and sweet eternal rest. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie Jr., her beloved siblings, Willie Thomas Ferguson and Dorothy Bailey, and her two children, Anita Jacobs and Stanley Lassiter.

Helen leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Joan Deloatch of Pendleton, North Carolina, and Janet Lassiter-Smith (Earl) of Durham, North Carolina; grandchildren, Douglas Deloatch, Jonita Jacobs, Kimberly Jacobs, Kendall Jacobs, Antoine Jacobs (Brandy), Katrina Jacobs, Jeremy Lassiter, Justin Lassiter, and Shayron Lassiter; nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She is also survived by her sons-in-law, Joseph Jacobs and Earl Smith, special friend Harry Keene, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a cherished group of friends who affectionately called her “grandma,” “auntie,” “ma,” or “cuz.”
