Helen Mitchell Obituary

“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I

give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.

~ John 14:27 NLT

Helen Ruth Mitchell, age 68, of Garysburg, North Carolina, peacefully transitioned from this earthly life on Tuesday, January 21st, 2025, at ECU Health North Hospital in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina.

Helen Ruth was born on Thursday, April 26th, 1956, in Northampton County, North Carolina, to the late John Arthur and Georgia McGee Mitchell. As the first and only daughter of her parents, following the loss of their first-born son, she was deeply cherished and adored. Helen’s early years were filled with the love of her family, especially her cousins, who viewed her as a living doll. Five years later, her brother, Nelson, was born, and their bond was immediate. Helen, affectionately known as “Ruth” by family and friends, lovingly assumed the role of protective older sister to Nelson and all her younger cousins. She would walk them to their first day of kindergarten and care for them as if they were her own.

Ruth’s love and devotion to her family were unwavering. She held a special place in her heart for her brother Nelson Mitchell Sr., whom she lovingly referred to as “Pro,” as well as for her nephew, Nelson Mitchell Jr. Ruth considered her nieces, nephews, and younger cousins her “babies,” and she was always there to offer them care, guidance, and affection.

Growing up in a home full of laughter and love, Ruth was often the quiet one, while her mother, Georgia, and brother, Nelson, were the jokesters who could always bring a smile to her face. Ruth developed a love for baseball early on, watching her father and brother play, and weekends were often spent supporting the Seaboard Allstars, their local hometown team.

A proud graduate of the Gumberry High School Class of 1974, Ruth was an active supporter of her alma mater’s athletic programs, even as the years passed and the Mighty Hurricanes continued their tradition. After high school, she attended A&T State University, proudly becoming a part of the Aggie Nation. However, the pull of her hometown and her love for her family brought Ruth back to Gumberry, where she worked for many years in the service industry.

Ruth particularly enjoyed her time serving as a substitute teacher at Gumberry High School, where she had the opportunity to once again care for the next generation of “babies.”

In her final years, as her health declined, Ruth became a resident of Hampton Manor Assisted Living Facility in Gaston, where she was lovingly cared for by the dedicated staff, as well as her cousins, Audrey H. Taylor and Hattie H. Vines.

Helen Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, John and Georgia Mitchell, her brother, John Arthur Mitchell Jr., and her dear friend, Howard Lee Douglas. She leaves behind her devoted brother, Nelson Mitchell Sr.; her beloved nephew, Nelson Mitchell Jr.; three great-nieces and five great-nephews; her aunt, Lola M. Philpot (Leon); as well as a host of cousins, friends, and all who were touched by her kindness, love, and warm spirit.

Helen Ruth will be remembered for her nurturing heart, her devotion to family, and the joy she brought to everyone she encountered. Her legacy of love will live on in the memories of those who were fortunate enough to know her. May she rest in eternal peace.
