Hessie 'Dank' Ward Obituary

Hessie Lee Deloatch Ward, daughter of the late Tessie Deloatch and Winnie Copeland Deloatch was born on Tuesday, December 25, 1945, in Northampton County, North Carolina.

‘Dank’, as she was fondly called, joined Willow Oak A.M.E. Church of Rich Square, North Carolina and remained a faithful and devoted member until her health began to fail. She served on many auxillaries, including: Pastor’s Aide Ministry, YPD Director, Community Outreach, Usher, Missionary and Steward Ministry. Hessie also served as choir member to multiple choirs including Branches Chapel Baptist Church and Cumbo Chapel Baptist Church.

Hessie was educated in the Northampton County School System; graduating from W.S. Creecy High School in 1965. She continued her studies at ECU and Meredith College. For a short period of time, she was employed with Mylcraft Outlet in Rich Square, North Carolina. She would later begin her career at W.S. Creecy School, as a Teacher’s Assistant in 1966, until her retirement of 35 years. Hessie also worked weekends at Vaughan’s Retail Store in Woodland, North Carolina. After obtaining employment with Northampton County Schools, she also became a bus driver and worked in this role until her health began to decline.

Hessie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She was a creative artist in drawing, with a specialty in bulletin board, calligraphy and floral design. She also enjoyed ceramics, working in her beautiful flower gardens and sewing. She was an excellent cook, loved to dance and was the self-proclaimed “Queen of Rich Square”.

Hessie was married to the late Junious Ward Jr. on June 5, 1965.

“When peace like a river, attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll, Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say, It is well, it is well with my soul.” On Sunday, May 1, 2022 God plucked a beautiful flower to add to his heavenly bouquet. Hessie quietly transitioned to her Heavenly Home while in the care of AuthoraCare Collective Hospice Center of Burlington, North Carolina. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by: one brother Russell Deloatch and two sisters, Fredrecka Deloatch and Carolyn Deloatch.

“Your life was full of loving deeds, forever thoughtful of our special needs. Today and tomorrow, our whole life through, we will always love and cherish you.” Her sweet spirit, caring heart and generosity will long be remembered by all those whose lives she touched: two daughters, Denean Ward-Jeffries (Brian) of McLeansville, North Carolina and Moni Ward Crudup (Reggie) of Durham, North Carolina; two nephews/sons-at-heart, Rev. David Lee Jones, Jr. (Gloria) and Yakeem Jones (Daneisha); four grandchildren, Desmond Jeffries, Cierra Boone, Dakota Boone and Gabrielle Jeffries; three great-grandchildren, Zoe, Raegan and Ryleigh Warren; eight grandchildren-at-heart, Dana Jones-Allen, Philip Jones, Makinzee, Ethan, Jayvon, Malia, Assad and Ja’Nyla Jones; three sisters, Gladys Jones of Durham, North Carolina, Eveline Rush of Bridgeton, New Jersey and Altessie Goode of Vineland, New Jersey; a special friend, Terry Palmer of Ahoskie, North Carolina; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
