Hugh 'Mess' Byrd, Jr. Obituary

Only God in his loving mercy knows the reason why.

Softly the stars will be glooming upon a precious grave.

Where we sleep without dreaming, one we love, but could not save.

The flowers we lay upon your grave may wither and decay.

But the love we have for you will never fade away.

HUGH BYRD, JR., beloved son of Hugh Byrd, Sr. and Madeline Deloatch Byrd, began his earthly journey on Saturday, August 8th, 1981, at Southampton Memorial Hospital in Franklin, Virginia.

Affectionately known as “Mess” to many, Hugh was a graduate of Southampton High School, Class of 2000. Following graduation, he was employed at Narricot Industries of Boykins, Virginia and later at Georgia Pacific of Emporia, Virginia. At an early age, he accepted Christ as his personal Savior and was baptized, joining Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in Seaboard, North Carolina. Known simply as “Byrd” by many, he had a heart of gold and was always willing to lend a helping hand. On April 16th, 2016, he was united in holy matrimony to Tavara Cooper.

On Sunday, January 25th, 2026, in the early morning hours, God gently plucked a beautiful flower from His earthly garden. Hugh’s seeds were well sown, and his work here on earth was complete. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Nora Byrd; aunts, Angela Lundy and Carrie Mahone; and uncle, Hirman Byrd.

Cherishing his love, kindness, and gentle spirit are his wife, Tavara Cooper; his children, Quanasia Byrd, Keyashia Byrd, and Ja’cion Carry; and children at heart, Daejion Eure and Teyana Brown. He also leaves to treasure his memory his parents, Hugh and Madeline Byrd, Sr.; brother, Bobby L. Deloatch; grandmother, Annie Ruth Deloatch Burnette; sister, Sierra Flythe; brothers -at - heart, Thomas and William Lyttle; aunts and uncles Thelma Lynch, Nora Byrd Futrell, Barbie Daye, Elsie Barnes (Jesse) and; Anderson Deloatch, Jr.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will truly miss him.
