Iris Lucille (Hardy) Newsome Britt

Iris Lucille Hardy Newsome Britt was born on Saturday, October 16th, 1926, to the late James and Priscilla Louise Hardy. She departed this life peacefully at her home on Wednesday, August 27th, 2025, surrounded by her loved ones. She resided in Seaboard, North Carolina, with her devoted son, Haywood Newsome.

Iris spent the majority of her life in Northampton County, North Carolina, where she met and married Jessie Newsome. From their union, seven children were born. Following Jessie’s passing, she later moved to Charleston, South Carolina, where she met and married her second husband, Lee Britt. After Lee’s passing, Iris returned to Northampton County, where she remained for the rest of her days.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Priscilla Hardy; both of her husbands, Jessie Newsome and Lee Britt; her sons, Jessie Newsome Jr. and Daniel Newsome; her daughter, Priscilla Cotton; and grandchildren Patricia Simms, Vivian Lucas, and Ronald Cotton.

Left to cherish her memory are her loving children: son Haywood Newsome of Seaboard, North Carolina; daughters Ernestine Sykes of Seaboard, North Carolina, Gladys Gordon of North Charleston, South Carolina, and Evelyn Rouse of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.

She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Marvin Williams, Sandra Williams, Phyllis “Cookie” Cotton, Rasheema Newsome, Erica Stancell, Tyris Rouse, and Elridge Rouse; along with a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, cousins and cherished friends.

Iris will be remembered for her strength, love for family, and the many lives she touched throughout her journey. Her legacy lives on through all who knew and loved her.
