James Lee 'Jim' Manley

James L. Manley, lovingly known as ‘Jim’, of Leesburg, Virginia, and a proud native of Northampton County, North Carolina, entered into his eternal rest on Tuesday, June 10th, 2025. He passed away peacefully, reuniting with his beloved wife and entering his heavenly home.

Born on Sunday, July 9th, 1939, in Seaboard, North Carolina, James was a cherished son of the late Robert Faison, Sr. and Annie Mae Manley Faison; being lovingly reared in the care of his grandparents, Robert Lee Manley and Fannie Smith Manley. He was raised with strong values that would guide his life of service, love, and quiet strength.

James was married for many years to Phyllis Horton Manley, the love of his life. Together, they built a home filled with warmth and faith in Leesburg, Virginia, until her passing in 2023. Their bond was enduring, rooted in love and mutual devotion.

James gave his life to Christ at an early age and remained a man of deep faith throughout his life. He and Phyllis were longtime members of First Mount Olive Baptist Church, where they worshipped side by side. He was educated in the Northampton County school system and graduated from Gumberry High School in Gumberry, North Carolina.

Following graduation, James honorably served in the United States Army, with deployment to Korea until 1966. His military service was marked by commitment and excellence, earning him several honors including the Good Conduct Medal, Safety Award, Rifle Expert Badge, and National Defense Service Medal.

After returning briefly to North Carolina, James eventually settled in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where he began a long and distinguished career in the hospitality and transportation industries. He started as a Greyhound Bus driver and, through dedication and professionalism, rose to become one of the company’s most respected bus driver safety instructors. His exemplary record earned him numerous safety accolades, and he became a beloved mentor to many in the field. 

Upon retirement from Greyhound, James founded the Greyhound Retirees Club, where he served as President for many years. His fellow drivers were like family to him, and he took great pride in fostering camaraderie and community among them.

Not one to rest for long, James continued working as a supervisor with the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority at Dulles International Airport in the Mobile Lounge division until his second retirement.

James was also a devoted member of the Masonic brotherhood, through which he lived out his principles of faith, service, and justice, His life embodied the values of loyalty, compassion, and quiet leadership.

In his personal time, James enjoyed road trips and working on projects with his best friend of over 30 years, Donnie. The two were nearly inseparable, sharing a deep and lasting friendship. One of James’ favorite hobbies was fixing up old lawn mowers and giving them away-a simple, thoughtful gesture that reflected his generous spirit. He found peace and joy in the outdoors, always tinkering, always giving.

James was a man of few words, yet his presence spoke volumes. He was known as a gentle giant steadfast, protective, and deeply respected. Those who had the blessing of knowing him knew they were safe in his company. His wisdom, kindness, and unwavering faith will live on in the hearts of many.

In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Phyllis Horton Manley; his sister, Fannie Bell Faison-Johnson, a toddler brother, affectionately known as ‘Chicken’, and his brother, Buster T. Faison.

James leaves behind a brother, Robert Faison Jr. (Mildred); sister-in-law, Josephine Faison of Jackson, North Carolina; sister-in-law, Hope Horton Welch and brother-in-law, Byron Horton both of Siler City, North Carolina; and his devoted friends and neighbors of over 30 years, Donald and Doreen Lucas, who were also his caregivers.

He is also lovingly remembered by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends many of whom counted him as a role model, mentor, and lifelong friend.

Though his earthly journey has ended, James L. Manley’s legacy of strength, humility, and love will endure for generations. In his own reassuring words: “It will be okay.”
