Jerry 'Mickey' Newsome, Sr. Obituary

Jerry Ronald Newsome, Sr, was born on January 4, 1956 to James Ralph and Rushie Peebles Newsome in Pendleton, North Carolina. On Monday, July 25, 2022, at 1:39 p.m., our beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend, slipped into eternal rest; while at his residence in Greenville, North Carolina. His seeds are well sown. His service on earth is complete and he now experiences the victory and triumph of eternal life.

Early in life, ‘Mickey’, as he was affectionately called, gave his life to Christ and joined Zoar Missionary Baptist Church of Pendleton, North Carolina and remained a member until his demise.

‘Mickey’ was educated in the Northampton County Public School System; graduating from Northampton County High School, class of 1974. After graduation, he obtained employment with the Newport News Shipyard. Recognizing a call to serve, he enlisted in the United States Army, serving four years, before receiving an honorable discharge. After serving his country, he relocated to Maryland, where he worked with the United States Postal Service in Fairfax, Virginia, The Prince George’s County Public School System and Republic National Distribution Company of Washington, DC. In addition, ‘Mickey’ and his sons, founded their own lawn care service, Newsome, Newsome & Newsome, with a slogan, “You Grow, We Cut. You Buy, We Plant”. He was known as a jack-of-all-trades and could fix practically anything. He was loved by all and was always the life of the party; telling his jokes and making all those around him laugh, even until the end. He had quite a few sayings. One of his favorite sayings was, “You better believe it”, how he said it was most memorable. When it came to sports, no one could beat the Dallas Cowboys, as he was an avid fan.

Left to cherish his memories are: his wife, Ann Marie Smith of District Heights, Maryland; five children, Jerry Newsome, Jr. and Lionel Newsome both of District Heights, Maryland, Robert Durham and Michell Durham both of Montgomery County, Maryland and Tammy Hart of Bowie, Maryland; two grandchildren, Jerry, III and Riann White; three brothers, James Newsome of Suffolk, Virginia, Eley Newsome (Senthia Claudine) of Pendleton, North Carolina and Ralph Gregory Newsome (Mayra) of Centerville, Virginia; one sister, Sandra Laurene Young (Watt) of Oxon Hill, Maryland; three sisters-in-law, Lavern Thomas, Florence Marshall (Michael) and Gail Sneed (Tony); two brothers-in-law, Russell and Ronald Smith; one uncle, Jonathan Peebles (Christine) of Chillum, Maryland; one aunt, Louise Taylor of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; devoted friends, Sharon Williams of Greenville, North Carolina, Willie Ray Taylor of Clarksville, Tennessee and Ed Johnson of Pendleton, North Carolina, a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and friends.
