Remembering ‘Sweet’...
We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that,
just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
~ Romans 6:4
Today, we pause to reflect on the legacy of love, kindness, forgiveness and respect, left behind by our beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend.
A TIME TO BE BORN:
On Friday, September 27, 1946, Jessie James Hawkins, Jr. life’s journey began, as he was born to the parentage of Jessie Hawkins, Sr. and Carrie Daniels Hawkins in Greensville County, Virginia, as the fourth of eight children.
A TIME TO LIVE:
“Sweet”, as he was affectionately called, was known by many. Upon becoming a young man , he joined the Job Corps, working for several years in Louisville, Kentucky. While there, he learned the trades of culinary arts and brick masonry. He successfully completed the program earning certificates in both. He ultimately grew and developed into an excellent cook.
As life progressed, he returned back home, where he became gainfully employed as a farmer; working for over 30 years in the agriculture industry. Upon retirement, he embraced the natural beauty of being out on the water - boating. At any given time, you could find him fishing, as he loved being in the natural environment. The natural bliss of life was the sweetest to him!
Jessie had a passion for God and in his later years, he realized the necessity of being a Christian; so he dedicated his life to Christ, was baptized and became a member of Piney Grove Missionary Baptist Church of Jackson, North Carolina, under the leadership of Reverend Timothy Edwards. He continued to be an active member until his health began to decline.
A TIME TO DIE:
When I come to the end of the horizon and enter the other shore. Remember me with fondness. Cry for me no more. I have found my final resting place, that special spot to fish. Remember the times that we shared, you too, I will miss. This is the journey I must take, and I must go alone. Know that my heart is with you, as I take this journey home. To that final fishing hole, For fishermen like me, to tell the biggest fishing tales about the one that got away. Remember me with fondness, this is not goodbye, It is “Till we meet again” at the fishing hole in the sky. On Friday, November 6, 2020, our dear loved one peacefully entered into an eternal slumber; while in the care of Vidant Roanoke Chowan Hospital of Ahoskie, North Carolina, as an angel of the Lord was summoned to bring Jessie home. He now reunites with all his friends and loved ones who have preceded him in death; including: his parents, Jessie Sr. and Carrie; siblings, Andrew, James, Roosevelt, Ora Mae and Hattie; nephew, Lynn; niece, Latashia; sister-in-law, Delores.
A TIME TO REMEMBER:
