Joe Banks Obituary

“I have hope toward God, which hope these men also look

forward to, that there is going to be a resurrection of both the

righteous and the unrighteous.” – Acts 24:15

JOE HENRY BANKS, born on November 15th, 1955, in Northampton County, to Claiborne Banks, Sr. and Carrie Grant Ranson, passed away peacefully on February 19th, 2025, at 6:00 PM at Roanoke Chowan Hospital.

Joe had a deep love for spending time at home with his devoted wife, Ella, affectionately known as Rine or "Sugar Lump" as he lovingly called her. He also cherished the company of his dear friends, Bobbie Mason and Linda Deloatch, who visited daily, especially Bobbie. Together, they enjoyed watching TV and simply relaxing in each other's company. Some of Joe’s favorite shows included cartoons, westerns, and the Lifetime Movie Network.

Joe had a fondness for simple pleasures—enjoying meals like burgers, fries, pizza, and potatoes, along with his drinks and cigarettes. While farming was one of his greatest loves, he also worked with the state and as a construction worker throughout his life.

He was preceded in death by his father, Claiborne Banks, Sr.; his brother, Julius Banks, Sr.; his sister, Joanne Banks; and his mother-in-law, Alice Stephenson and father-in-law, Lorenzo Richardson.

Joe leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish his memory, including his wife, Ella R. Banks; children, Alice Richardson Lowe (Terrance), Theresa Richardson (Aaron), Carrie Banks, Thelma Bradley (Conrad), and Gwen Bell (David); eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He also leaves his mother, Carrie Ranson; sister, Bertha Johnson (BJ); brothers, John Banks, Leon Banks (Trudy), and Claiborne Banks, Jr.; his in-laws, Pamela Newsome (William), Cynthia Richardson, Bennie Richardson and Joseph Richardson; along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and many friends.

Joe’s warmth, humor, and love will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His memory will continue to live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
