Joel Calvin Walton

Time will not dim the face I love, The voice I heard each day,

The many things you did for me, In your own special way.

All my life I’ll miss you, As the years come and go,

But in my heart I’ll keep you, Because I love you so.

Joel Calvin Walton, age 70, received his eternal wings on Wednesday, February 1, 2023 at 8:06 p.m. while in the care of TriCities Hospital, Hopewell, Virginia. Joel was born on August 20, 1952 to Robbie and Geneva Walton in Southampton County Virginia. Joel was preceded in death by his parents, his one and only sister, Vanessa Moss and his eldest brother, Robbie Lester Walton.

At a very early age, Joel gave his life to Christ, was baptized and joined Chapel Grove United Church of Christ. Joel thoroughly enjoyed serving the Lord and made it a very important part of his life. Joel was educated in Isle of Wight County Public Schools. After graduation from high school, he attended Paul D. Camp Community College, where he obtained an Associates Degree in Business Management.

graduation from college, Joel’s career began. He held quite a few jobs; one of which was a position at Newport News Shipbuilding. He remained there for over 20 years, until his retirement. In his latter years, Joel was hired by the Hopewell Public School System. He remained on this job until his health began to fail.

On July 5, 1997, at Galilee Baptist Church in Branchville, Virginia, Joel was united in Holy Matrimony to Linda Jean Rooks. Joel and Linda relocated to Hopewell, Virginia and began their lives together.

Joel’s hobbies included hunting and fishing. He was an excellent hunter. He loved to hunt rabbits, squirrels, but most of all deer. His love for hunting gained him access to membership with several hunting clubs throughout the years. Spending time on the water with his friends made his day!

Those left to cherish his memory are: his lovely wife, Linda of the home; his son, Derek Doles of Newport News, Virginia; his brother, Tony Walton (Wendy) of Windsor Virginia; one aunt, Delores Bowling (Randolph) of Suffolk, Virginia; one uncle, James Brodie (Barbara) of Franklin, Virginia; one great-aunt, Leather Stokes of Windsor, Virginia; brother-in-law, William Moss of Chesapeake, Virginia; sister-in-law, Barbara Walton of Suffolk, Virginia; two aunts-in-law, Mrs. Margaret Walton and Mrs. Roxanna Walton; god-parents, Sam and Lois Duck; one special best friend since sixth grade, Tommie Lee Holloway (Brenda); a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Relatives and Friends are encouraged to visit Mr. Walton's tribute wall to share memories, extend condolences and to order floral tributes, as sentiments to the family.
